Ubuntu's Natty Narwhal release

I'm looking forward to trying out the new Wayland graphics system.
There comes a point in just about every software project where it becomes unfeasible to carry on hacking an old architecture/design to fit new hardware and user requirements.
Out with the old and in with the new (and probably unstable/untested/buggy).

Innovation is what made Ubuntu the best desktop linux distro in the world today and innovation is whats going to keep them ahead of the others in the future. Go Ubuntu! I love innovation. I get so bored of the old stuff.

I am looking forward to trying this out. But will be running da live CD first for sure before installing. Me wanna see if I like it first. :-)

Maybe by the time they get to Zooming Zebra they can compete with windows 95 on the desktop...

Seems a lot of big players are heading down the wayland road:

Mark Shuttleworth has announced plans to offer Wayland as an alternative to the X Window System in the Ubuntu version scheduled to be released in April 2011.[8] Fedora developers have said that "switching the default [is] likely to happen" in some future release of Fedora.[9] Intel and Nokia want to adopt Wayland in a future version of MeeGo.[10]

Wayland / Unity sounds like a great idea. (and if not, I'll just run Gnome, dunno what everyone's fussing about, just have to install it manually probably)
More importantly, that Ubuntu One API is gonna lead to big things. Brilliant.

i'll give you marketing. not so sure about the innovation given most things included in ubuntu are projects run by other groups (the same as happens with other distros tbf).

I wonder how they became the most popular distribution without innovation...

what did they innovate that wasn't available in other distros already?

innovative marketing? that would be more likely cash resources? what else?

The Ubuntu font & humanity theme!! :p

No, seriously, Ubuntu has done more for Linux than any other distro. For the first time people were actually considering moving from Windows to Linux - "normal people", not geeks. Just for that you have to applaud him.

And if people are not interested in Linux anymore, it will die a slow and painful death, no matter how good it is.

Hello EVERYONE!!!
This post this completely and utterly wrong. Ubuntu has no plan or suggested intention to use Wayland in Natty. In fact they won't use it for years. This is two bit 'summary articles for clicks' journalism and is highly irritating DELETE THE ARTICLE. This led to a whole load of comments of YAY innovation or BOO change in the comments about something that isn't even happening for years.

Maybe read the original post on the issue
http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/551

anyway seriously stupid nonsense. A load of graphics cards would be ****ed for the system. He says four or more years to change in the blog post.
