HTC Android smartphones to get FOTA on all South African operators

Guys really....LOL....i upgraded months ago on cellc....what is all the fuss about? I had a 300MB left to burn so did it over 3G...

PS
i know the update is not 300MB... ;)

CYANOGENMOD

Say NO to waiting for the carriers and their BS excuses, and say NO to HTC Bloatware.

Been living Sense-less for a few months now and couldn't be happier. CM7 nightly 3 is running smooth as silk on my desire. Gingerbread FTW.

Which phone (assuming Desire)? And what firmware version were you running before the upgrade? Where did you buy your phone?

Some may not have noticed the lack of FOTA support, but there are those of us with older iterations of devices that have had to wait for one little firmware to be pushed down to unlock a slew of other updates.

Thanks to FOTA finally launching down here you'll never have to feel this pinch with future upgrades.

Been running 2.2 on my hero for a couple of months now after getting fed up waiting for official 2.1 :(

The article seams to suggest that leaf are only loading the valid SA IMEI numbers onto the server, it doesnt say anything about the other network operators coming on board for the OTA updates?

If I am on vodacom, will my OTA updates work and will I be billed the data?

If the Nexus One can run 2.3, then i don't see why the Desire/HD/Z can't IMO.

HTC even though they are slow on software maintenance, they are still better than the other OEMs (*cough* Sony)

when it updates you don't loose your apps and settings but will if you install one of the custom ROMs right?

don't think it will apply if you are running a custom rom

I suspect Leaf couldn't just push new ROMs down without the buy-in of the operators.

All MTN's coming on board involved was supplying Leaf with the IMEIs, it looks like.

By loading the IMEIs of every eligible HTC device into their system, the updates will become available to those devices (based on what Leaf said). Just like on MTN we'll have to pay for the data, though.

Seems that zero-rated FOTA was but a pipe dream. No-one else in the world has it really, so I guess it's understandable (albeit a little disappointing) that we don't get it.

Can you add that to the article? I must have missed it if it's there. I can see people OTA'ing their phones and going knuts when they get slapped with a fat bill.

Well, Apple updates (the 300MB to 500MB jobbies) have never been free, so why should Android updates be different?

Just glad we can now get the updates.

It's not in this article, but we have covered it in the past. If I get a chance I'll add it, but you are prompted before downloading and told explicitly how much data will be downloaded. If you're not connected via Wi-Fi you are also warned that the download will incur data charges.

Co-incidentally, Quinton Leigh (MD of Leaf) expressed the same concern last year (people getting slapped with a fat bill and getting angry). Which is why he said he pushed for zero-rated FOTA.

It seems as if the operators didn't see it his way, but I'd wager it's because the FOTA servers aren't located in SA. Unfortunately Leaf didn't want to divulge the details of where exactly the servers are or whether they'd be rolling out local ones.

Well because Apple is the devil's work and they're probably working hard on making it so you can't turn on of their devices on without entering your credit card details.

Seriously though, how many people would have fancy, high-end Android phones and not a PC with an internet connection?
