Zero-rated FOTA (The "F" is for "Firmware") turned out to be a pipe dream, so now we have what the rest of the world has. Took them long enough mind you.

what about the tatoo??

The Tattoo was a mistake and no updates were even released overseas. I'm sad about it too as I am a former Tattoo owner, but I'd suggest checking out XDA - they have some interesting stuff going on there.

Can one get this update via WiFi? Or do you have to use MTN/Vodacom 3G/data?

Can it be downloaded separately, then applied? If one guy can grab it, then share it with others, that'd be cool. I'd like to keep things official- no 3rd party stuff, which leads me to believe I'd need to get it, literally, over the air...

I updated my desire form 2.1 update 1 this morning.

Went through a few rounds of updates.

At one point it said "loading" then said "HTC Sense threw an unknown error" or something then that disappeared and it said loading again and kept doing that over and over again.
I had to do a hard reset (http://www.htc.com/europe/howto.aspx?id=721&type=1&p_id=312) to fix it.

That erased all my apps and settings but I was then on 2.2. The rest of the updates went fine.

Yes you can download with the WIFIs. The phone gives you an option to use WIFI only and not use 3G.

It's not a feature, but there are ways to grab the URL where the update is located and then downloading it to your PC - check XDA for the particulars. Once you have the update you can put it on your phone (rename it to update.zip) and then there should be a way to flash it through recovery. You don't need Root access for it, but you need to know what's potting. When you do it OTA it's either all automated or it has very helpful prompts.

Basically your phone will pop up and say "theres an update available. download now or later?" "now" "later"
then "We recommend using wifi to download, might be data charges etc" "wifi" "3g or wifi"
Then downloads etc. Phone reboots, automatically does the recovery type thing and it's done. (assuming you have like 25mb space, otherwise it does all that then tells you it's not done and you need more space)

I've got an HTC Desire from Nashua Mobile, on an MTN contract. I've tried updating the firmware through the phone (Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > Check Now) but all it does is say "Checking..." with a rotating loading icon. It just keeps doing this for minutes on end, up to the point I get gatvol and cancel it.

It does this when connected via 3G or WiFi. And yes I've made certain that while checking for updates my internet connection is acutally working.

I remember that previously (months ago) it would check for an update, then report that there are none available after a few seconds.

Any ideas?

EDIT: OK so I did a hard reset, and that sorted out 2 problems I was having. The USB disk drive and Sync mode wasn't working before but now does. Also, checking for the software update works. Yay!!! Gonna start the update to Froyo now! Tuesday is suddenly looking much brighter!

Weird, Vodacom gave my Desire FroYo in late October 2010 already. My MTN friend only got his early this month.

Not a good start. Found and downloaded an update then tells me it's corrupted, do I want to try again. Which I did 4 times. Oh well.

This happened to me while trying to download the third update which was about 4.5 megs. I switched the download from Wi-Fi to 3G and this fixed the problem.

i too have an HTC Desire on mtn contract but manually updated mine to froyo last year already, took like 15 minutes

forget HTC ,leaf or any of our lame cell providers. check out http://www.xda-developers.com/ for ways to update your device. read the instructions and take your time, getting root for your device is well worth it. Cyanogen is a fricken LEGEND! ;)
