Google reveals Music Beta, a cloud-based music service

Only available in USA, useless to me
 
All it lets you do is store your own music in the cloud, it's just a holding service.
 
There's a ton of these kind of services. As mentioned above me, all this is at this stage [due to Google being unable to secure any deals with the record labels] is online storage with the ability to stream the files directly from the storage.

There is actually a ton of standard online storage services that could do this for ages now. I won't be surprised if something like DropBox can stream music already. Sugarsync can do it, and it's probably already a better solution than Google due to the ability to store anything on there : http://www.sugarsync.com/blog/2008/09/08/introducing-sugarsyncs-music-player/ [Sugarsync and Dropbox is close competitors i'd say].

Note the date on that article : 2008 . So whatever Google and Apple is doing now is kinda "old news" . The only thing Google and Apple was MEANT to do was the ability to PURCHASE music and then -they- stream the file for you, without you even uploading the file. Amazon is doing exactly this. You don't upload 50GB of mp3s to them, you buy your MP3 from them and they add it to your cloud-collection for you. I believe Amazon don't even make multiple copies of the file, they share the same song to everyone who bought it....

So Google's service is not going to be complete without the ability to purchase music . They are then better off making a "generic" cloud storage service with the ability to share photo galleries [Picasa] + videos [youtube] and music all from the same storage...
 
Bleh.

Why they always only have their services in USA? Dont they have offices now almost everywhere? They even have a SA office for gods sakes. But appart from that...the only usefull google services I use is the search engine, mail and Google Nave (also only supposed to be available in USA!) tsk.

The Cloud for me is a bunch of who-ha anyway. You pay through your cute little ASS for the bandwidth and frankly...I would prefer not to have my things stored on a server somewhere that I dont know who or what can access it. Call it paranoya....I call it human nature.

wake up. people outside of the usa also listen to music.
if you don't offer cheap music services to us, we will make another plan.
which doesn't involve going to a shop to buy a cd.

Agreed. These big companies need to realize that other countries might also like a slice of the pie! Including SA!
 
I think that the service will reach everyone doorsteps but for now they need to test it. This is show them how much people will exploit it. For instance if its like googles docs and u can share items between people. Then if this has the same principles the same can be done and there u go "legal" file sharing.
 
i watched a couple of videos earlier on this. when i first heard about it, i thought, oh boohoo. but then i suddenly realized after some of the videos that this is actually a really cool thing. remembering that i stay in south africa and internet speeds here are, well frankly prehistoric compared to some other nations. folks everything is moving to the cloud. the faster our internet speeds become, the more we will migrate to the cloud. who wants to download music to a hard drive only to loose it when the drive crashes when you can upload it to your music account and forget (you know what i mean) about it. i am also confident that other online music stores will give you the option to "copy" to your music account (if you need to go to different stores). clever, well orchestrated launch!
