Brilliant - I had to turn on debug mode first before I could telnet into the router, but otherwise worked 100%.

Netgear DG834G SNMP Capabilities

Quickest way to setup SNMP with PRTG to DG834
Here are the steps guys:
1) Access your router on http://192.168.0.1/snmp.htm
2) Enable SNMP and make your community name 'public'. Click Apply.
3) Type in the address bar: http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug (it will say "Debug enabled").
4) Click Start, Run, type in 'cmd' to get a command prompt.
5) Type 'telnet 192.168.0.1' (You will see a BusyBox shell prompt).
6) type 'iptables -D INPUT 1' at the # prompt (this disables SNMP blocking).
That's it, your router will now respond to SNMP requests on port 161. Get yourself a program like PRTG and hook it up, remember that your community string is 'public' but PRTG should default to that anyway.
Of course if your router has a different IP address simply replace 192.168.0.1 in all the steps above with whatever your router's IP is.
Note that if you make any changes to your firewall rules, if your router reboots or if it reconnects for any reason then the DG834 will reset the IP tables and you will need to run that command in the telnet window again. That's all you will need to do though, the SNMP setting remains and the debug mode stays active until you physically reboot the router.
It produces really nice graphs once you get it going so I'm hoping Netgear will improve the SNMP support in future firmwares.
PS. I'm just posting thist cos it's the simplest way to do it, you do not need the inbound and outbound firewall rules mentioned earlier.

DG384G as a receiver
I read once that the DG384G could be set up to act as a receiver from another DG384G which could then distibute to ethernet connected PCs. I have a spare box and would like to set it up to do this, does anyone know how to archieve this ? The problem is that I link to the net in my study (where all my PCs reside) and only get 600kbps or so. From the main telephone socket I can get 2,500 kbps which is much more desirable !!

I have a DG834GUK v3 that I user a program called RouterStats with, which works via SNMP.
To get it to work I had to first use the hidden SNMP enable/disable page and enable SNMP:

Then, I had to go into the Firwall Rules section http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=start.htm
Then create 2 outbound service rules.
No. 1 was for SNMP-TRAPS
No.2 was for SNMP
Then I had to create 2 Inbound rules.
No.1 was for SNMP on the modem (192.168.0.1 or whatever you have the modem set at).
No.2 was for the SNMP-TRAPS which I set as 192.168.0.2
Then I downloaded and installed RouterStats from:

For the my modem I had to use it on Telnet mode, which seems more accurate. The graphing is excellent. Once you create those rules PRTG will also work by the way, as will a host of other monitoring software.

I'm probably resurrecting an ancient thread here, but just wanna say thanks guys! Been looking all over the world on forums for help on this and here I find it close to home on our own forums!
I'm now plotting my netgear's statistics with Cacti and it's great!
