Is FNB looking to become another mobile operator?

I think it would be great if they took over Telkom. Then STD bank takes over Neotel.
 
I sure hope they do! The more competition the better, and they're not doing a bad job of it in the banking sector!
 
How do you make free calls from an app? VOIP service? How can that be so cheap? Anyone mind explaining this?
 
I'm on their FNB connect, though I haven't used it properly yet, and now they're offering iPad's cheaply. Something's up with them!
 
I use fnb connect for mobile and Adsl and I have started using it for calls from my cell as well. Very happy so far except the Adsl is down now. They blame an ATM ring failure which is affecting multiple ISPs.
 
Could it be for sending SMS messages for free?

The plan might be to use the license to send their 100 million monthly SMS messages (In Contact service etc) for free. Currently ECNS license holders don't charge each other for SMS messages sent, as there is no SMS interworking charge between mobile operators. This would save FNB R17 million per month.

Mobile operators charge between 17 and 20 c per SMS for messages sent via the WASP route.

The incumbent operators strongly discourage commercial SMS messages that enter their network from a point of interconnect. MTN recently put out a press release announcing a solution to block such SMS messages originating from international mobile operators (socalled "grey" routes). This was justified based on the associated risk of SMS spam.
