e-Toll registrations kicks off

The e-toll account registration and the distribution of e-tags for Phase-1 of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) kicked off on Monday, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has announced.

I don't think anyone is going to register just yet, with the toll review deadline only in Feb.

I just want to register my disappointment with the whole thing!:D

Register to be drained of more income - yeah right.....

I will not be registering. They can shove their tollgates where the sun don't shine

They must be smoking something if they think people are going to rush out and buy an e-tag.
Time to get a Botswana number plate.

In case anybody missed it:
- Buses and taxis don't pay.
- Logistics companies can claim the full toll amount plus VAT back from SARs.

Also when tolling commences in February 2012, logistics companies will be able to claim back from SARS the toll tariffs as well as the associated VAT, and therefore the cost should not add to freight company operations and consumer prices.

That means that only passenger vehicles and motor bikes will be paying for the entire toll road infrastructure.
Does that sound like a fair "user pays" policy?
Why the #&*@#& must I pay for damage caused by over loaded trucks?

cos you know how the amount of damage cars cause compare to trucks and busses are huge

/glad im not in jhb

Pay the tolls so the sacked ex-ministers still get their R840k per year :/

I wonder how busy the b-roads are going to get. All the masses that can;t afford or don;t want to drive the toll roads out of principle will head there..massive congestion, damage to roads, accidents etc etc.

If it is true that fleet companies with their trucks get exempted from the tax then that is not really acceptable. They are the ones causing most damage and congestion any way.

.. and will the blue light brigades with their so called "VIPs" whose lives are always in imminent danger be paying like the rest of us or be exempted?

That's crazy, you're going to end up with only trucks, buses and taxis on the tollroads, not paying tolls, then how are they going to pay for repairing the damaged caused by the buses and trucks?. I don't think anyone should be exempt, ESPECIALLY buses and trucks, which essentially are if they can claim it back from SARS.

In any case, the "e-toll calculator" on the website is "...currently not available", so now you are expected to register for something, that you have no idea what you are going to pay for. I don't think so.

I saw last week there is a SANRAL e-toll shop at benmore shopping centre in sandton. I lol'd. Besides teh 5 SANRAL e-toll employees, the shop was oviuuus empty....

i work from home, thank gawd.

Which ever Monkey in a suite dreamed up this paying for tolls, he/she can pay my share.

I thought the toll projects were suspended?

Phase 2 was suspended. The GFIP was Phase 1. Gauteng e-tolls are still going ahead, it's new work in Phase 2 that has been put on hold till the review in February.
