The device found in a box at Eastgate on Monday was not a bomb, said Gauteng police chief Lieutenant-General Mzwandile Petros.

The media reported what the police spokesperson said.
The fact that the plods don't know ass from elbow isn't the media's fault.
EWN too, but in their defence, it was all about the SAPS spokesperson calling it a bomb.
Clearly that person needs a few lessons in PR as well as to know when to play dumb.
Until you absolutely know it is the real McCoy, it's best to say I don't know yet.

Good grief....first they say it is a bomb and then they so oh no sorry it was not a bomb! Get your frekking story straight! They were talking about it on 702 today. They saying that people might now start thinking that the police back tracked not to do harm to the "economy" of Eastgate mall so close to the festive season.
Besides....why blow up a tool box if you saw there is only wires inside?? Surely a bomb squad should be able to distinguish???

It was a bomb, my gf works there and heard it when they detonated it...
they obviously trying to hide the truth even though there were quiete a lot of eastgate employees who heard the loud explosion....

They destroy suspicious items by detonating them - they actually blow them up inisde a containment vessel.
Will it make a huge exlosion sound inside a containment vessel? she.said when the explosion went off everyone waz running, screaming and panicking...

Well the news can't seem to make it's mind up though I do find it odd that they detonated a box of wires anyway. Whether they deteremined that before or after the blast.
What I'd like to know is what was stolen while everyone was outside.
I dunno... I heard an EWN news thingy on 702 yesterday where they played a recording in which police spokesperson at the scene actually said that the case contained an explosive device and had to be disarmed in a control detonation.
Perhaps not making it up per se, but instantly reporting without corroboration.
Explosive device > box of wires when it comes to news.
