Cell C - Vodacom roaming in Cape Town central disabled

I wanted to know, what does using data while roaming in South Africa (with a CellC SIM) cost?

I wasn't sure, and I heard a story about people going overseas with roaming "on" and getting hectic bills, so I put my "data while roaming" off.

It's free...but the same applies when foreigners come here....
they can either roam on cellc, mtn or cellc....but will get charged accordingly...

I would like to know why CellC did this. Was it because they now have sufficient coverage or was it a cost cutting exercise? If the latter then I would assume things are a little tight over at CellC. Or I'm missing the point completely!

Although the article doesn't make it quite clear, I think we can assume that Cell C's Cape Town coverage is now sufficient for Vodacom roaming to be switched off.

Not sure much cost cutting as profit maximizing I think. Even though you're roaming on the Vodacom network and you use their services they still make a profit (albeit a smaller one) so switching it off means that they want a bigger share of the pie and more confidence in their network coverage.

Could this possibly be the reason I have been experience crap connectivity via my Cell C Internet Dongle the past month or so. It disconnects frequently and in the evening the speed just becomes unbearably slow. And I've been getting a lot of "connection rejected by remote host" or something along those lines errors.

Since the 26 December 2011, CellC have turned off the gprs/edge data reception in my area(yes gprs/edge. We don't yet have 3G from CellC, but we have 3G from Vodacom, MTN and even 8ta). They told me today that I have to wait until April for them to switch the gprs/edge on(yes not 3G)...
Bye CellC, hello 8ta. Time to port my number.
