Vodacom's coverage battle

Bunch of nutjobs... that's what these conspiracy crackpots are. They want better cellphone reception, but they don't want a tower near them.
And cos some moron started a trend of complaining about a tower, now every fear mongering looney has jumped on the band wagon.
Science has gone out of the window and mad irrational panic has taken root.

yep, meanwhile this week the sun pumped more radiation through your body, than cellphone towers have emitted in your entire lifetime.

I said that to one of them and she replied with "well yeah, but the Sun doesn't cause cancer, does it?"

bwhahahahaha. Urg.....and then people wonder why I am so anti social and self absorbed!!! Cause of people like that!!!!

PS: Springbok is not Western Cape...but Northern Cape :-)

The reason for that is she believes Mel Anoma is a distant cousin to the Spice Girls and Ultra Violet is a pretty flower.

Probably, when I told her I was not gonna support their cause she told me to "enjoy my cancer" and hung up on me"! :D

Out of interest why is Vodacom still erecting 2G towers? Surely all the new towers they are erecting should be 3G?

I think Jannie will be better placed to answer this, but the 2G network uses 900MHz and 1800MHz used mainly for voice. Vodacom obviously also needs more voice capacity as well, and hence the continued 2G network growth.

I am sure their full network can fairly be upgraded to LTE though (and even 4G :D).

I wonder how many complaints was telephonic (using a cellphone).

Or did they complain via email (on a 3G network)?

In response to this Vodacom has installed boosters at some of its stations, to extend its service to those areas where masts might have been removed.

People are so opposed to new towers being installed, that the networks have no option other than to install boosters on existing stations. So they're INCREASING the power output of the towers in order to compensate for a lack of towers further away.

All of these nutcases have no idea what the maths means. Electromagnetic signals attenuate at a rate of 1/r^2, where r is distance from the source. Basically, holding your cell phone next to your head will expose your brain to radiation several orders of magnitude higher than standing at the foot of a tower will (your cellphone needs to broadcast at exactly the same power to reach the tower as the tower has to broadcast to reach your phone). And to make matters worse, your cellphone's power output is determined by the signal strength: the futher away from a tower you are, the more radiation your cellphone emits.

If these people are so against cellular radiation, the best way to drastically reduce the amount of radiation they're exposed to is to throw away their cellphones, instead of doing their best to make sure the rest of us never have signal.

Please don't confuse the issue with science. ;)

All nice and pretty this, but why is there a decrease in quality of service in existing areas that already have vodacom towers?

Because people make more mobile calls and use more mobile data!

Not to mention that the kids and the gardener now have cellphones.

Exactly. 26 Million active users and 13 Million active data users puts massive strain on the network.

As pointed out above, the more towers are blocked from going up, the worse the quality gets for everyone.

And, here's the sad bit, the fewer towers, the harder they must work. So these 'health' groups are actually their own worst enemy.

I hope this doesn't effect the All Saints high site due for this month! :(
