Vodacom and Cell C free Gmail SMS snub continues

What a load of BS, money grabbing thieves!!!

Would make life much easier and cheaper if I could SMS my friends / family who are on vodacom and cell c, which do not have BBM / WhatsApp via my droid...

I still don't get this. Although I haven't tested it recently, I always (like, for years) used to be able to send automatic SMS reminders from Google Calendar to my Vodacom number. That was long before Gmail SMS went live in SA. Which is why the big announcement confused me. Surely we've always had this anyway?

Don't be surprised if the reminder SMSes get stopped too!

Vodacom have a free SMS thing on their site where you get 10 free sms's a day. They obviously put considerable investment into their own system and so it makes little sense for them to now drop it for a gmail solution.

On top of that, they know it will hurt their sales. By supporting it they will only help it grow. By not supporting it they stop it in its tracks, and lets be realistic. No one is going to change their provider just for gmail's sms system.

You're lucky. MTN stopped those calendar reminder SMS's a while ago and only recently let them through again.

I think they just might lose a chunk of the prepaid market.

The likes of Vodacom (Bit pipe provider) will never be able to compete with the Googles of the world when it comes to these types of services.

I wonder if MTN have some agreement with Google and hence they allow it free on their network, 8ta just jump on the bandwagon since they use the MTN network I would assume. VC, weird since the group do it elsewhere, maybe some sort of regulatory hurdle we aren't aware of???

Cell C, its at times like this that you have to miss Lars - he would have definitely put out a statement providing a little more clarity. ****, with all the AKC stories we finally have one he could actually be useful on today and NOW there is not a peep..

The only reason I see is that they can't seem to find a way to make a profit.
We all know big corp don't do anything if there is not profit to be made.

I'm looking forward to the day that smartphones are so cheap and mobile data connections so reliable and cheap that the thievery that is sms will forever die. I'm actually surprised it lasted so long, considering that we've had a few IM options for quite a few years.
