Hi All

I've been having major issues with packetloss on one of my DSL lines (I have 2 - the one on 704-xxxx is giving issues and the one on 462-xxxx seems fine) - Have reported it to Telkom numerous times over the past month - The latest update is that they are aware there is an exchange problem with I'm assuming the Douglasdale exchange (Which I think is part of Olivedale).

I have noticed that my router is picking up major CRC's errors on the ATM AAL5 Interface and VCC statistics (55161 in 8 hrs overnight)

Anyone also have open tickets for this area?

Thanks

I'm on the 704-xxxx and no issues on my side ...

Syncing at my 1mbps and download at 100+kpbs - which I think it normal for it

Got massive problems currently have 1 ticket open for this and a history of 4 or so. Telskum know the exchange or interlinks are buggered, they are just taking their sweet time to sort it out. Last I chatted to them they "may" upgrade olive sale after April maybe, if they feel like it

As a quick side note are u connected to the new sub on Galloway ? Then olive dale? I have a theory that there is where the main problem lies

Just noticed now when I got home the 011-462-xxxx dsl line is now crap slow - also packet loss but not nearly as bad as 011-704-xxxx - I'll try their fault line again but doesnt look very promising - I too have had 4 or 5 different tickets over the past few months - Last time the guy thought it was distance from the DSLAM until it was revealed that I'm 250m from it on the line that's working and even less for the line that isn't - Then tried to explain that it might be because I'm so close lol... Idiots - the bunch of them.

Well if everyone on this forum with the same problem collated them then hopefully telkom will pay some attention, send me your ref numbers and I'll get a hold of the area manager on Monday. Send me your refs , traces and use ping plotter for 5 mins on 10 sec intervals. Hopefully united we can get something done ASAP

Good Idea - After 42 mins on hold finally got through again to Telkom - Apparently there are a helluva lot of open tickets on this exchange/area - He confirmed that it is congested as well as faulty between the DSLAM and the upstream exchange and they are working on it and it has been escalated numerous times.

I'll call again tomorrow and Sunday and if nothing improves by Monday I will escalate it via our large corporate account manager for the group I work for who has helped in the past as he is quite high up the pecking order and has influence. At lease he might be able to get a firm ETA on when this crap will be sorted.

I'll keep this thread updated.

I just checked. I'm on 462 ****, working great. My neighbor on 704 **** is getting 10meg no issues.

It looks to me that maybe it is specific racks in the DSLAMs are the issue. There were a million telkom techs driving up and down the road by the Mandeville exchange today though.

704xxxx isn't 10mb enabled?

Yeah I think you may be right - or could be there are multiple DSLAMs in the area that are all part of the 704/462 prefix

I'm in Galloway Ave, Douglasdale - both 462 and 704

I think the 704 numbers are connected to the box at the bottom of Galloway that is part of the problem, the 462 ones go to the box mid way up the street that seems ok

Hi,

Not sure its that simple, I am on 462 and heres my ping stats this morning (and for the last couple weeks)

--- telkom.co.za ping statistics ---
2950 packets transmitted, 1919 packets received, 34.9% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 60.290/93.543/466.517/21.735 ms

That's a pity , indicates that it is olivedale exchange, as soon as I get home I'll post my traces and reports here so telkom has a point of reference

Well since Thursday evening my 462 xxxx line is worse than a 384k when it does work and the 704 xxxx is very very very bad.

Look's like this is something which isn't going to be sorted anytime soon - I will see what I can find out again on Monday

well this is the feedback I got form WebAfrica a couple days back (I have had them escalate it to telkom as well) :

Hi Brian

According to the update on your fault, it has been linked to a network fault, which is caused due to congestion on the exchange.
They have stated that they are planning out maintenance by the end of April.

The major congestion on the exchange your line is running to could also be due to the fact that the area you are located in, has business lines running through the exchange as well, causing this to max out and slowing everyone down connected there.

They have also stated that they will only know what the realistic timelines will be for the upgrade on the actual exchange by the end of April.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait this out with Telkom and see by month end what the progress of the upgrade will be.

Please do let us know if you do not receive any feedback concerning this issue from them by then, as we will then request further feedback for you.

Trusting that you find this in order, and that it has been of assistance to you.

We strongly apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you, as we can understand how much frustration this is for you.

Regards

Just got off the line with the "helpful callcentre", after waiting 45 minutes on the phone I got through to someone, when I asked why my outstanding query which was logged 2 months ago to the day and has supposedly been escalated has not been dealt with or responded to I got the following response:

"Have you tried resetting your modem?"
"Perhaps your line is broken, should we send a tech, please note that if your line is fine we will charge you"
"ETC ETC ETC"

After about 20 minutes of this I got a bit annoyed and asked to speak to the supervisor who assured me that NOTHING is wrong with Olivedale and no one else has reported anything in the area. He then asked if he could CLOSE THE CALL as clearly nothing is wrong!!! GRRRRRR

I hate dealing with the telkom call center, I just hope Webafrica ain't lying to me

So my fault has been closed as succesfully resolved, phoned in to check and according to Telkom my line should now be clear, fully functional and running at full speed. I am unfortunately at work so I can only check this evening. Anyone else on this exchange who can do a test see what you are getting now I'd appreciate it.

I am hoping to be pleasantly suprised *crosses fingers and toes*

UPDATE:

My GF managed to get a speedtest and pingplotter run done just now, Line speed is at .91 Mbps down and .43 Mbps up which is a massive improvement. Packet loss is down from 70-80% to below 20%.

All in all a massive improvement :) The question now is has Telkom actually fixed the problem or just switched me to a port or equipment while bumping someone else?
