Paying to stop SMS spam - who should foot the bill?

I found out after I noticed my airtime dropping at a radical rate that I was signed up for Buongiorno SA/35050. Called them and said I had been signed up since sometime in 2010! I then asked for proof of subscription and only received 2011 dates. At least a R1000 worth of airtime gone down the drain. When I asked for some kind of refund they just ignored my emails! GO F*** YOURSELVES Buongiorno SA/35050

You didn't notice R1000 disappearing, but you are on 384k lite uncapped? I'm confused :P
 
I am guessing they ignored the first 1999 requests to "STOP" sending him spam, so he sent the 2000th sms...
 
most just ignore these spam sms and it gets delete thanks to android program.
 
The retards spamming should be whacked with a HUGE fine for each message, never mind the unsubscribe cost.
 
Before porting away from MTN I used up every cent of my remaining airtime by replying STOP to every spam SMS I've received in the last few months. 2 birds, 1 stone.
 
WASPS complain about multiple STOP's being sent. Not surprising, as often the STOP doesn't work and billing continues. So desperate victims send multiple STOP's in the hope that "one goes through".
 
One thing I do find interesting, is where they get the numbers.

Got 3 Sim cards from the same SP

Had no problems with spam on them till I changed one to my banking notification number for online sms's
The junk soon followed that move on that number while the other 2 stayed spam free.
I ignore the spam on it as the phone is never loaded with airtime and only used to get transaction codes.

Joke was that the number is question was only given to the bank and nobody else.

banks sell your numbers. they even say so in their conditions. even if you say you dont want that option.

Absolutely, and the sooner the better. I hope mama gets onto their case asap.

Please set up a spam hall of fame: cats digital, sony sa, wetherlys, RCI, Holiday Club

The story of abuse doesn't apply - the system needs to only allow one stop to each spammer.

Why not just allow a message 'stop all waspa' and eliminate all waspa members from sending in one go!
 
i wanted to add its similar to the Post Office box renewal option. I dont want any damn marketing yet i still find a whole lot in my mailbox. is the sorter really gonna check which box i ticked on my renewal slip!!!
 
It is absolute nonsense that the corresponding SMS sent to halt the spam is chargeable. Operators should have a sort of junk mail filter option for SMS on their website portals for us to make use of.

Ooh in that case I made the best decision ever without any knowledge. SCORE!!!
Seeing that its a test phone I actually love the fact that it has test sms's on it as well, so I dont have to send my own.

As for On Topic.

Anyone use Do Not Dial applications on their phones? I know Android has one where you add numbers and never see them again, ever. Hell you phone doesn't even alert you when messages come in from that number.

I use this feature on my normal phones to block calls for when I am sleeping but I know it can be used for unknown numbers and sms spam as well.

Yep! I had a long reject list till I realised I could block ranges of numbers. I blocked the whole 087 range, lol!
