SARS unveils e-filing app

No links to the app? No mentions of which platforms will be supported? Is it launched, or about to be launched?

there is one on the android play store called "Tax Que Stop" don't know if you can trust or use it.

Nice. Shows you how well government can work when it comes to taking your money.

I think the idea of completing your return on a phone might not be the greatest idea - on a tablet, it can work:)

I will still complete mine on the good old pc - don't need to download an additional app - especially considering I do this only once a year.

lol, this is funny they say they have an app but its not available

Why on earth would I download and install an app that I and most other people, will only use once a year? I honestly don't see the point of this.

Maybe its for people who dont have computers.

Good point and probably correct. If that is the case, one has to question the number of people that have relatively expensive handsets capable of running this app, who don't at least have access to an internet-capable computer through which to rather do their filings.

because its the obvious route to go? did they send you an invoice for the development? they never forced you to use it and said if you dont use it u will be jailled or something. If it helps 1000 people to now do theirs online then great...

stop complaining and be thankful at least one place in SA actually makes use of technology to get "paperwork" done...

Who do you think pays SARS' salaries/development time? Or does the money fall out of the sky? It's most certainly not the obvious way to go. It is a way to go. Without more details it's difficult to comment, but for example, people with iPhones or Galaxy S's and the like most probably already do e-filing online. Older people are even less likely to start doing it on their phones if they aren't doing it through the website.

I'm not complaining, I'm saying from my point of view it's a slightly pointless exercise and I don't see the effort taken to create this being warranted. Secondly, you could do a mobile site to achieve the same results, you don't need an app to do it. Would you install a piece of software on your computer to use once a year? I wouldn't. Hell, I don't even have Outlook installed on my home desktop and I check email several times a day.

For both tablets and iPhones? Are iPhones not tablets?

Edit: I am just trying to be a smart-ass here. In general, SARS are doing a good job. Their marketing, communication and innovation should be commended.

If it saves you from going to a an actual SARS branch, yes you would ;)

This is all in an effort to get more people online using the electronic filing capabilities of the system instead of you going to a SARS office.

If I was to say write an app like this I will most assuredly come with an iOS and Android version and not bother with BlackBerry.

On the SARS Facebook page it says:

As announced at the media briefing today, several innovations to assist taxpayers with filing their returns such as the eFiling App, the sarsefiling.mobi site and the Help-You-eFile service are in final testing and will be made available within the next few weeks. Watch the press for details.

Looks like the reporter have neglected to pick up on the timeframes.

My understanding is that there will be both iOS and Android apps (doesn't look like universal apps so it may suck on a tablet) and a mobisite providing most of the functionality eFiling provides but at the moment geared towards individuals.

As for the limited times one would use such an app ... I have countless apps that I use only once in a while which doesn't detract their usefulness. I personally don't think the apps are geared towards the average mybroadband user ... but there are many thousands of smartphones in the hands of taxpayers without PCs for whom this may be very useful.
