Anyone using VoIP from their Android/iPhone mobiles?

I would like to use my contract's data-bundle to extend my talk-time per month and maybe (hopefully) save some cash.

I'll only use it in areas where I have 3G reception, and I'm prepared to buy calling credits from which-ever VoIP provider.

What I would like to know is, does it work o.k in SA? Assuming I have a decent 3G connection on which-ever network.
My main concern is that the VoIP servers are probably hosted in the USA (Fring, Skype, etc) and when I tested this a few years ago I experienced massive call-latency. And given our exchange rate, the calls are actually more expensive than simply making a normal call. (R3-R5 p/m to SA)

Are you aware of any local VoIP provider that has a server in SA and supports any known Android/iOS app for calling and works out to less than 99c/minute?
 
I use FaceTime a lot. But not to do calling to landline numbers like you seem to want to.
But the picture and audio quality is superb. So I can't see why any other services wouldn't be
 
As long as you find an area of decent 3G signal and dont move around while you're chatting, skype / tango works great :)

I use it on my Android phone and the audio quality is far better than normal voice calls. You you hardly notice the delay
 
Skype worked fine with my antique 3565-z modem on my netbook. It also worked fine using my SE x10 mini pro as a modem with EasyTether as connection to the netbook.

My Android phone connects to the office PABX using VoIP over the WiFi when I'm in range. Don't think that's quite what you're looking for though. :)
 
Donno if this counts but I use Viber for VoIP... but the other person needs to have the application too. No clue where the servers are... but over Wifi, the call quality is quite good. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but still an option.
 
Ive heard only good things about viber. Have it on my GS3 but havent had a chance to use it yet. Fiance is on BB so for now, we're incompatible.

I've used Skype a bit in the past, but only over wi-fi. I know in the US for example they block all VOIP traffic over the 3G/LTE networks. But then again they have uncapped data, we have insane, super-mega expensive data so it might be different.
 
I do not know if mobile Skype works like the desktop version ala supernodes?
If it does it will cost more even while you talk, Also does it use push notification?

We used Microsoft Lync in the past for in Office communication might be worth a look as you can have your own server in your company:

We switched to Viber end of Last year as we can also get our customers to run it with little to no extra effort.

Viber has limited BB & WP support but they working on more, my vote will go to this for the cheapest solution, as the application use push tech for call alerts so you can leave it running 24/7, think of it as Whatsapp with voice, and text.
 
Whilst we are about it - any options for the blackberry

I just want the software, not the service

I only used it on Wi-Fi and I never received calls on it, only made some. But it's likely since the app runs in the background and gets added to your accounts & sync settings (which I turned off when on mobile networks)

As for supernodes, I never actually bothered to check to be honest as I was just using my uncapped connection. I think it's a moot point now anyways, since Skype has switched to dedicated, hardware supernodes now:

I have used Skype on my HTC Wildfire with mixed results. Yes I was Skypeout at the other end of the call and that was in Cyprus where communications can be challenging. Skype to Skype seemed to work fine. Anything is worth trying to keep in contact at an effective price rate. I have also used Skype on my iPad with a wireless hotspot on my phone to connect the iPad. Worked great including my sending video and that was in the centre of Johannesburg where reception can be difficult. Give it a try Warmest regards Tim
