Microsoft put Windows 8 graphical power to the test

Windows 7, rendering rectangle = 1000fps;
Windows 8,rendering rectangle = 10000fps.

Wow massive improvement...

There must be a lot more to Win8 than just graphics acceleration.

It sounds as though these are really fixes ('slow code') which could have been done in Win 7 by upgrading a few .dll files but I guess Microsoft needs to try and break even again.

This whole thing about not having a star button is stupid. It actually works better in my opinion without it. You can easily organise your most used apps into the first couple of tiles on the Metro UI, the search function is easy to get to and works well and you can hold apps on the desktop like any other version of Windows. The only difference is that the start button is now invisible and is in all 4 corners of the screen effectively.

^ This

I don't know why people think it's not there anymore.

They did not mention gaming performance in this article, seems irrelevant to me. I want an option to have the whole metro interface disabled on Windows 8. I do have an Application for the start button.

They're getting pretty desperate now. Vista/Me/Bob here we go again ...

Great ghosts of 3.1

But it doesn't have to be the first thing you see.

We know what you are saying, but the public backlash on the ground is that users don't like it.
Unfortunately it seems like MS is headed for another Windows Vista Debacle.
Windows 8 is going to be a dud... maybe the tablet side of things will save them, but for the desktop it will be a failure.
Bookmark my post and come back here in a year's time and we will see....

I must say, I don't miss the start button at all. if I want something, I hit the windows key and type what I'm looking for...
If you need to run anything like the command prompt in admin mode or open the control panel, to mention a few, you can just right click on the bottom right and you have a menu with a few of these commonly used items.

Metro is revolutionary and the same way the start button changed the way we access things in Windows 95, metro will be the way of the future. Furthermore, most devices these days, including phones, have touch interfaces. With this new "norm", Microsoft is making the user interface on their operating systems conform to some sort of standard interface. Take the XBOX, Windows Phone and now Windows OS for example, they are very similar and I love it!

Win 8's success will depend on a few things out of MS's control. The actual OS is pretty awesome, I much prefer it to 7 right now. It is quicker to navigate, runs more efficiently and looks and feels much more modern.

For me its success will hinge on:
The apps developed for it (especially for the mobile versions)
The integration of either touch screen or multi touch on laptops and desktops (this being the most major issue)
Battery life vs speed and "wow" factors on laptops and tabs (aero themes, animations etc)
and the overall integration MS will offer. Ie: setting up your skydrive to sync with the app on your device, Xbox integration, Office integration, social networks etc etc

Windows 8 is the first time I can remember having a desire to own a PC over a Mac running OSX (my memory only extends back to about 2006 at this point) MS has given themselves a clean slate, they have decided to employ a team to actually make an attractive OS, they have thought long and hard about how people use machines, how they navigate them and come up with metro. It also seems pretty stable, even on the release preview. The Start button is really a non issue, in fact removing it has solved more problems than it has created. If I want to see which programs are running I go to the top left corner, switch between the desktop and metro bottom left, bottom right brings up my settings, connections and the new "start menu." It becomes intuitive after 30 minutes with it. MS have pulled an Apple here.

And this thought just came to me but is Metro not effectively just expanding the start menu to be there permanently, just with large tiles instead of a list and horizontal instead of vertical scrolling?

Yup. Better than Start Menu - live tiles, more configurable.

Win7 feels so old-fashioned.
