Telkom R169 ADSL deal: The best out there?

The full Telkom “Awesome” promotion, which is only available to new clients on a 24-month contract on debit order.

Nothing to see here, moving along....

Still there will be many happy with this package.

What exactly is so bad about signing a contract for something you plan on paying for the next 24 months to come in any case? Fine you are paying a few bucks more per month than the next cheapest adsl line rental offer out there, but at least you are getting a few gigs and a modem for those few bucks.

They would need to pay me to take out a 24 month contract. To bad there will be people who will jump on this and be sorry in six months time.

24 month contracts are so out dated.

There will be a lot of old grannies that will jump on this. It falls within budget and they will never use over 5gb. Not everyone needs uncapped. A step in the right direction for Telkom.

For new Telkom customers remember to add line rental.

how will the CPA save you here? what cancellation fee will they rape you with? R169 isn't that bad if it's going to get bumped to 1mbps? not a product for gamers and people who want to download the internets, but it's more for those people who have lolcats blocked at work or need to email people or if they work from home.

also, you could always get another account and buy 1gb vouchers.

and this applies to around 75% of current ADSL users...

if it was inclusive of line rental and not a contract i'd be tempted. hell of a lot cheaper than cellc prepaid. even if i had to buy my own modem.

While I'd rather avoid any account with telkom it doesn't look like a bad deal to me (assuming it will be 1mb shortly) because I don't use/need to do huge transfers at home. Also fine for a lot of other people that are probably paying vodacom R300+ for 500mb etc.

The thing is, the 384 line will probably not get upgraded to 1mbps within the contract period. We have been waiting for more than 2 years for our 4 > 10mbps upgrades, and there is still no indication that it is actually going to happen.

And people, it is common sense, never sign any type of contract with Telkom. They still haven't shown a single sign of being a reliable and trustworthy company.

If one signs a contract @R169 per month from now, after october, they will have to pay full price right?

The 5GB Deal is a good deal at R219 per month in my opinion, but I would get the 8ta 10GB deal rather than the Telkom Do Basic.

Awesome fast Internet?! What a joke! They should be reported to the ASA

I agree with you, but keep in mind what they may want to achieve, they are maybe aiming this offering at people that has no internet at home, or just use it for Internet banking and to Google the odd thing here and there. Although I think the biggest problem is still that they charge Line Rental in addition to the ADSL, I also think TelkomInternet (Do) is a different business unit which has no control over the Line Rental decision. So I'll give them credit where it's due.

The simple reason not to sign a 2 year contract is to be ready to jump ship if something better comes along. It still fascinates me to see the big companies doing 24 month contracts (Telkom, Vodacom, MTN). This can only mean that there's so many people who have no idea that there's something better out there, or the hassle of switching is so much more difficult. The big guys know it and gets away with binding everybody in 2 year contracts...

Ok, it obviously also includes the hardware costs and lots of people dont want to spend the money upfront. But once you have an ADSL router you can pretty much continue using it on month to month.
