Article: No fracking for now

There will be no hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo, for now at least.

mmmmm.....frack! dont frack FRACK! no, dont frack Frack.......idiots

Yay! Hope we get more support to stop this.

Why? Because of the risks? Because the same risks, in fact more, exist in the mining sector. So are you advocating a moratorium on the issuing of all new mineral permits and exploration licences too? Are you drumming up support to have mining banned? Are you aware of the financial windfalls associated with such a huge investment in the country? Or are you, like nearly every other tree hugging hippie objecting to this, making vast assumptions based on conjecture and wild, uninformed extrapolation of lies perpetuated by documentaries like Gasland?

Tree hugging hippy.

I do not feel as a country we can do it. We can not handle the mining industry, we have idiots holding the ecconomy at ransom because they feel like it.

This is not something that should be done because some politician is being handed a nice kick back. Who do we believe? The tree huggers or greed? I for one is voting for nature.

Yes and the hippy in me hates it when our heritage is laid in the hands of corrupt greedy politicians. If they can show us something they have done properly , I might change my mind.

So assumption on assumption on assumption about some sort of corruption and that we are such a fscked up country that we could never handle a fracking project?

That is a pathetically weak argument. Make another one up, in case someone else asks you about it some day so you can avoid this one you just used...

Agreed with Mila.

Otherwise we'll be having another Macondo Well issue.

More assumption and conjecture based on the assumption. Good to see the vehement objection to this project is based on researched opinions and not the emotionally charged lies of a few unscrupulous hippies with a video camera, whose sentiment has infiltrated the mindsets of many a sane individual by now. All because everyone is eager to call the big oil companies bullies...

You up to date on what's happening in the mining industry?

What if they reach a critical milestone, and the whole lot strike, causing ecological damage because nobody's able to operate the machinery due to the unions blocking access to said machinery?

On the Marikana issue? Absolutely. What if the moon falls off its axis too?

The what ifs are for the company to handle, not for you and Mila and a few other tie-dye trendsetters to determine on their behalf. It's a terrible excuse...

It's a reality not an excuse.
You can also only speculate.
What if it works? Since when has something like this not backfired in SA?

It's a reality not an excuse.

No, it's your assumption based on your own negative preconceptions of this country. Stop confusing the two...

You can also only speculate.

Of course. Because I haven't seen the risk assessment performed. I'm not the one calling for its outright banning though...

What if it works? Since when has something like this not backfired in SA?

Many, many, many times. I assume you're talking about a large project, in which case I must remind you that this is a private endeavour, not a government one. And we are a country founded on such success stories and who continue to this day to successfully manage large-scale projects, in the private sector...

We can choose not to fill up at any Shell garages. And spread the information and let others learn about the consequences of fracking to the environment. Nothing like bringing a massive global company to "understand" our side of the story.

So fracking will kill the Karoo then? This is based on your analysis of the risk assessments of the Karoo environmental impact studies, right? And boycotting has worked a treat since the 70s, hasn't it?

I just came from some mines in Mpumalanga - clients of ours, and they are thriving. The entire community is reliant on them. Don't let the issues of one or two mines pegged on the news taint your image of the entire mining industry as a whole.

Fracking, done correctly, does far less environmental damage than coal or ore mining - yes there are risks - that's why there will be an extensive two year environmental impact assessment done to weigh up the costs of fracking in the Karoo.

People against fracking are the ones usually uneducated on the process and easily excited by environmental sensationalism.

Unscrupulous hippies? Really? As opposed to what? Unscrupulous oil companies and their PR machines?

I am a nature-lover who cleans up other peoples' litter. I can muster strong philosophical, religious and scientific reasons why we must protect and preserve the planet. I own an expensive property in the Little Karoo, so I am deeply invested in several ways in preserving the Karoo in particular.

However, I am not opposed to fracking in the Karoo. In fact, I welcome it. I don't expect to benefit in any way, other than the general benefit to all South Africans.

The anti-fracking crowd here in the Little Karoo displays all the characteristics that I find detestable in ostensibly educated people. They are wide-eyed and articulate bigots driven by ideology in complete disregard of the science. Their conversation is laced with the crypto-socialist slogans of the day, and their arguments are sophistic and ultimately anti-rational. Scratch a little, and their anti-human animus is revealed.

I can't wait to see the anti-frackers spluttering in apoplexy when fracking starts. The fracking itself, responsibly done, is a good thing, just like any resource extraction. It will also bring benefit to thousands of impoverished and unemployed people in the Karoo.

I hope the final go-ahead is not delayed.

I personally am in a bit of two minds about this..

The economic benefit is potentially massive, but I don't know about the ecological impact this process will have.
I know they're just stories for now, but the stuff I've heard of about fracking in the states says there is potentially something to be worried about.
