SEACOM explains downtime (11 September 2012)

+1

What kind of operation are they running! No backup gennies??!!

This power failure affected partner backhaul equipment at one of the SEACOM London data centres.

Their partner had a failure, how exactly do you prevent that?

It is like blaming MWeb when your Telkom exchange blows up. Not much MWeb can do about it, but they take the blame because your line and data is with them :D

I do hope Seacom find another partner in London though, it is quite embarrassing :o

Then why didn't they had a back-up in the form of a generator? :erm:

How do we know they don't? A generator backed-up data center can still drop if you blow an inverter on the UPS, or a circuit breaker after the UPS. Or someone drops a wrench on a bus bar and welds the phases together.

Then how do some companies manage, to almost always be on, up times? :erm:

someone forgot to fill the genny with diesel after there monthly test runs, diesel jerry cans stolen to fill up data centre ops private vehicles lol, but genny prob had to high thresholds for when to kick in, i work around the corner in harbor exchange, bit more complicated that flicking a switch and genny kicks in, lots to consider before a genny is brought online plus seacom prob not the only customer affected is genny kicks in and cuts mains to other customer kit :(
