For the last 2 weeks, I've had nothing but the slowest internet under the sun.
I'm using a 4mb uncapped mweb account.

After complaining and reporting my slow speed problem for days on end and always getting conflicted results I finally discovered the truth about why my line is so slow.

If I perform a speed test on mweb's site, it indicates my line is near perfect with results like 3.5mb/s down and 45kb/s up. Yet no matter where I go, I never get that speed.

I was perplexed! Today I discovered that Mweb cannot shape anything that goes through SSL, so I performed a little test that I would like all mweb users to replicate.

I opened a youtube video at 480p and waited 15 seconds for the video to start I noticed that the video stopped 3 times in the first minute, usually for around 10 seconds. (That's 30 seconds a minute)

Then, I opened the same youtube video but I added https:// at the beginning of the url and lo and behold.. It loaded instantly with no wait, the first minute cached before I even finished watching 20 seconds!
The whole 6 minute video played without stopping once!

I tried again without the https added to the url and again, it kept stopping.

I have replicated this on news servers too and other youtube videos.

Yesterday, we received a call from mweb asking us if we wanted to upgrade to 10mb/s.
I suspect the shaping has been intensified in order to make the 10mb/s seem more attractive.
Meanwhile they can't even give us 4mb/s when we pay for it.

I don't know about everyone else out there, but I'm gonna use https:// on all my web pages now since mweb refuses to give me the data I pay for.

If they want to warn me via email and cancel my account, so be it.
I'm sure there are plenty of ISP's out there that don't shape EVERYTHING all of the time.

I'm paying for a 4mb line that NEVER reaches 4mb.
This is bs!

But Dude, it's "Uncapped" remember!

Not the FAKE uncapped, Mweb would only give you the REAL deal! ;)

I have the same account at mweb and noticed the same on youtube and I agree... a 4 MB line is supposed to give you uninterrupted streaming on youtube so whats up with that?

As much as I've been happy with Mweb, I've also noticed the decrease in speed, particularly at peak hours during the day.

Try to stream stuff on Mweb, slow as hell or just times out. Switch to my free FNB gigs and it's quite happy.

I'm going to keep an eye on this and see how things go.

"UNCAPPED DATA / CAPPED THROUGHPUT" :)

No... In which areas are you guys based. Overall my monitored usage is working flawlessly on 4mbps uncapped. Had hiccups due to Telkom, but that is sorted. No problems with Youtube or any other streaming thus far today… This is my speedtest.net result (http://www.speedtest.net/result/2249511497.png) on 4mbps and that were done while uploading to my webserver. Upload normally average on 0.7

Same with my IS business account, no problems… In all honestly I downgraded my Mweb package from business to home account, same monitored results and way more affordable. Only advantage with business accounts were that if Seacom suffered you would still have adequate throughput.

Also when do you guys notice speed decreases, while doing what? How many connected devices etc?

Hi zantetsuken

Thank you for the detailed information you provided us.

I would like for you to provide me your MWEB email address or customer number via PM so that I can do some checks on our side. If there is something, then I would like to get the technicians have a look at this.

As for the other guys who are having the same experience, please do the same and provide me your account details via PM.

Hi MWEB Guy, This is the exact issue im having with my line still since you last assisted me.

For the past 2 months I’ve been experiencing significant issues with my Mweb Uncapped 1mb ADSL package.

I’ve done speed tests, tracert and constant pings to multiple servers only to receive the same result, intermittent latency and download speeds. I can literally watch my download speed spike between 0kb/s and 60kb/s constantly whilst attempting to stream a youtube video (240p) at some point the streaming even stops dead for up to a minute then picks up again, with a constantly fluctuating speed.

Downloading via FTP or HTML never gets over 50kb/s ~_~

I’ve re-configured my router, restarted it, checked all the hardware related to my internet connection and even used a different router and another desktop for testing purposes. I have nothing running on my machine that’s utilising the connection and my machine is virus free.

Could you please shed some insight

Good Afternoon

Please provide me tracers to local and international websites, i.e. mweb.co.za and bbc.co.uk

It seems like we're all being shaped to 50kb/s.
I've been stuck between 0kb/s and 50kb/s for some time now too.

The only way around it is to use ssl encryption.
That in itself proves that it is an over shaping problem.

I'm not going to provide my account information as I am breaking fair use policy by using ssl to overcome your heinous shaping policies.

I have the exact same problem, been having it for 2 weeks now.
Like I said, try with SSL and see the difference for yourself.
We're being shaped to hell and back!

I don't think you read my original post.
The speed tests are unshaped and provide false information on actual speeds we're getting to everyday websites.

You afraid of something ?

Try testmy, might want to read a little about the tests too... It can only help

Why Should I Test My Speed?

Simple, to make sure you're getting what you pay for. This speed test is useful if you feel a connection slow down or want to see how your Internet is performing. This isn't like any other broadband speed test. TestMy's proprietary method is proven to help identify issues other speed tests fail to detect. The TMN Speed Test shows your true speed.

Does your ISP send you to a speed test they host?

Internet providers like to eliminate any variables when testing, so they send users to internally hosted speed tests. This can help an ISP mask their shortcomings, namely with peering
. Remember, your provider isn't only responsible for giving you access to their servers... you're paying for Internet service, not LAN. Make sure that they don't fool you into believing the problem has to do with the websites your visiting. TestMy.net has been a trusted free Internet resource since before your ISP ever even thought about making a speed test... possibly before they even existed. Furthermore, TestMy grades all connections based on the same criteria regardless of provider and we are not affiliated with any providers so our results are unbiased. TMN has no stake in the outcome of your speed test results. We work for the consumer not the ISPs.

Afternoon Prophet, as far as I know you have a 4mb account. You will therefore not receive speeds higher than 4mb.

True... and sad. I guess oom paul has not brought in my ship yet

torrents will and always have been shaped and gives way to other protocols when demand is high. stop being an idiot

Grinch much. :wtf: I would think that a user with +17k posts would have learnt to be polite by now.
But maybe you still stay with your mum in the basement and sounding tough behind your keyboard is all you have in life.
