Groupon tries to explain Windows 8 Pro deal mess

How can anyone trust them or even take them remotely seriously. They're in for a fast buck and have little to demonstrate otherwise.

Typical of them...

Lie even further when they're shown to be trying to rip people off.

haha, I would never have trusted Groupon in the first place. :D

Microsoft is trying to send you a message... stay away from Windows 8!

What surprises me is that a reputable company like Microsoft would partner with them.

One would think that Microsoft would do a better job of protecting their reputation by not getting involved with the likes of Groupon.

reputable company like Microsoft

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Exploits / Holes / Crashes / Zero Days - and a reluctance to fix these quickly - has made Microsoft directly responsible for BILLIONS in losses in productivity and the criminal result of malware exploiting these... Reputable my arse.

Nice post - perhaps just clarify that it might not be R299 exactly so your customers don't get a fright.

At the current exchange rate $39.99 equates to R350, R50 more than the advertised price on MS SA website. I have spoken to numerous MS support personnel today and could not get a straight answer out of any of them. The fact is that it amounts to misleading advertising which makes MS a bigger fail than the Groupon fiasco. I'm a MS fanboy but it seems that as soon as something hits our shores it goes pear shaped

How are they still able to claim and advertise '70% in savings'?!

It obvious now that this is the upgrade version and not the standalone..

I bought the download this morning for +- R355, downloaded it, burned it to disk, installed it. Install it from the disk without booting from it and keep documents and setting. Boot from the disk and you can install it without keeping docs and settings and programs etc. Wrote a big 8 with a koki on the disk and put it away. Not going to pay extra for nice packaging.

Incredible Connection are selling the STANDALONE WINDOWS 8 PRO for R699. Get it while stocks. It is NOT the UPGRADE EDITION.

Microsoft South Africa further confirmed that the Windows 8 Pro deal offered on the Microsoft website is exactly the same basic product as the products offered by stores like Groupon South Africa and Incredible Connection – with the exception that the Microsoft deal offers a digital copy of the software with a disk.

So iow the M$ deal offers exactly the same as the Groupon et al deal?

M$ Deal: Digital copy of the software with a disk.
Other's Deal: Digital copy of the software with a disk

I suspect a typo.

:erm: They're in the business of scamming people? I've reported them to ASA before for false advertising, but according to them its a civil issue. :wtf:

However, this claim by Groupon South Africa is false. According to the Microsoft website the upgrade will work for PCs running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3).

Good job, MyBB and big boss revs per minute in particular, for finally calling them out as the liars they are.

This is contradicted, again, by what we heard earlier from forum members who contacted MS SA. They said that the online download version would not allow cross-architecture upgrades, while the boxed version would.

Why is it so hard to get a proper answer? Can you upgrade from XP 32bit or 7 32bit to 8 64bit with the DVD? Yes or no?

Can you do it with the download? Yes or no?
If the two answers conflict, then it's most definitely not exactly the same product.

Groupon tries to explain Windows 8 Pro deal mess

Groupon says that its Windows 8 deal is a Microsoft approved promotion, but falsely claims that Microsoft’s own deal is not as rosy as it looks

Who exactly has done what about this? or is everything just waiting for someone else to do something ?

I don't know... a good job would be a complete job. That means informing ASA at least. Should a good job not also include proper investigation as well? All I saw here was someone saying someone else had a deal on without anything explained or looked into. Now that groupon went flagshipped we are pointing without second thought, right.

Well, you're right in that it's not OK to let them get away with this, but MyBB is a news site, it's not really their job to go after every false claim and make sure the offenders get prosecuted. We the customers are not idiots (although I do feel like one for falling for their scam) so we have to take it further. I do believe they (MyBB) should stop punting any "deals" from Groupon in the same way that they don't give that guy with the ink cartridge scam any press, or run any Power Balance ads, or at least be VERY careful and ask some pretty damn serious questions in future about any "special offer" coming out of GroupCon before plastering it over their front page.

Not my job either... but hell I guess taking 5 mins out of your time is a ****ing terrible thing to do, even if it is the right thing to do. Yes we will, and always, wait for person next to us to rather do what we could have done. I know this. This is true in most cases.

One think that after the proxy saga lesson was learnt, but it was not. I do however agree on this.
