Hi

I want to buy a mobile 3g speedstick/usb modem.
Preferably one that takes any network sim card & is fast.

any suggestions?

An E1820 if you can find one.

CNA has E352 (MTN) but it works on any network.

Matrix sells unbranded sticks (chipset/maker unknown).

El cheapo dongle...

As per the thread title I am looking for a nice deal on a 3G dongle for my new toy:

The TP-Link MR3040 could do with a nice partner and at this stage I've got my eye on:

At R399 it is not bad imo. But afaik it is the K3570-Z that is a 3.6mbps dongle? Any other deals/options I should be aware of?

Yeah don't get a cheap dongle...my ZTE from Vodacom has not worked from day one but I have other dongles that work well.
If you are planning to make use of Cell C then make sure your dongle covers their frequencies.:wtf:

MTN has a cheap dongle that does 7200 but I am not sure that the TP link is compatible. That TP does have a network interface which lists its compatible modems. Start there.

What is wrong with the K3570-Z? I assume R399 for this modem is cheap.

It's a ZTE. Search MBB for ZTE and people having issues with them attached to desktop OS as well as routers.

When you add the time in frustration and troubleshooting a ZTE modem to the tally, you could have bought a better spec Huawei.

Agreed. ZTE is the bane of my existence - I will just release mAcme update SANS zte support at this rate. The MTN one is a Huawei but the newer breed and may not be compatible with this router. I think the 8ta modems are also Huawei.

My 2c, I used to sell Huawei MTN dongles and we never had issues. The ZTE one's Vodacom sells are a nightmare (when they go wrong, which often happens).

This is a modem I got free with Vodacom Internet Starter Pack for R399. Two years ago. Nothing wrong with this modem, but it is outdated and not cheap. Not wise to invest in this modem, while you can get E367 (HSPA+ 21Mbps with external antenna connector) for R300 second hand, as posted on this thread.

Check the modem compatibility list and get the best one of the lot

... and yes - stay away from ZTE - they never get firmware updates
