Crazy hey. The worst part in all of this is that it happens so often that it has become a norm for us to read it.

Yep, I am concerned about the lack of response to this thread. Seems like people just accept it as an every day thing now.

I've always wondered, the confirmation of rape, what does it involve? Do they check for semen? But then if the oke wears a rubber he'd get away with it so that cant be used as an indicator of rape, at least not a reliable one

And evidence of being forced?

Rape is an act of violence and as such usually causes considerable trauma to the genital area. Anything from tiny tiny tears in the vaginal wall to all out bloodied, torn anus and perineum could present. Just because we have a name for it-don't try to forget how hideous of a crime this is.

Yep, I am concerned about the lack of response to this thread. Seems like people just accept it as an every day thing now.

I have a small issue with the recent push for awareness in this area. I feel that males are sorely underrepresented in the context of rape and violent crime. It's almost as if being a young boy means your childhood is all hearts and lace and roses and nothing bad can happen to you, and if you're a full grown man then surely you can't be raped, right? I mean, that's the stuff of bad jokes right? We even have an advert about drunk driving that plays on the concept of prison rape... Remember pappa wag vir jou? How can we justify something like that in the light of this push for awareness around rape? Somehow, no one seems to give a toss.

Cape Town Man Appears on Child Rape Charges

A Cape Town man has appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court for allegedly sexually assaulting six girls, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Cape Argus reported that the 58-year-old man appeared on Tuesday, charged with four counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of crimen injuria.

The alleged crimes took place between 2010 and 2012 with girls aged 14, 10, eight, four and three.

Prosecutor Togieda Sambo said the crimen injuria count was added because of an alleged incident 18 years ago.

It related to an incident in which the man allegedly "insulted the dignity" of a nine-year-old girl by asking her to open her legs so that he could look at her underwear.

The girl, now 27, came forward after she heard the man had been charged with crimes against minors.

The man was apparently known in the community as a "grandfather to everyone".

He wanted to be released on bail but a crowd gathered outside the court and demanded that he remain in custody.

According to the newspaper, he would be held until his formal bail application on April 23.

Just too many of these to make individual threads for all of them, so I'm just going to put them all in this thread. :(

The grim reality of life in South Africa.

You could easily do a list of rape incidents similar to the corruption thread DJ... is working on. It would be an immensely long list though.

All point to the fact that our government is doing far too little and/or doesn't give a rat's bum about the people.

ANC Councillor Arrested over Rape

An ANC councillor was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl, North West police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the girl and her friend were walking back from a sports ground on Saturday when the 45-year-old councillor gave them a lift.

He allegedly said he needed to draw money at Makapanstad, but instead drove to Hammanskraal and withdrew the money there.

He then bought the girls food and made a braai.

"It is alleged that after the braai the councillor promised to take the 13-year-old minor and her friend back home to Sutelong village in Bedwang, near Mmakau," Ngubane said.

"Allegations further state that while the suspect was driving he stopped his car and ordered the victim to accompany him to the nearby bushes, where he raped her."

They both got back into the car afterwards and he allegedly drove them to a nearby dam, where he raped the 13-year-old girl again.

"The victim managed to escape at the dam and she went home and informed her mother," Ngubane said.

The girl's mother reported the incident on Monday.

The councillor was expected to appear in the Themba Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Cape Town Baby Rape Case Transferred

A Cape Town man accused of raping a four-month old baby is expected to go on trial in the Parow Regional Court in three months, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Cape Argus reported that the 54-year-old man has been in custody since October 20 and has not yet been asked to plead.

It is the State's case that the baby's mother left her in the man's care on the night of October 19 while she went out.

The baby was sleeping when she was dropped off. A short while later, the constant crying of a baby was heard by a traffic officer living in the same complex.

The officer went to investigate and knocked on the door for about 10 minutes. When the man eventually opened the door, he allegedly said he had been sleeping. The baby was inside, wrapped in a blanket.

According to the report, the baby's mother later changed her daughter's nappy and found blood.

She was checked medically and found to have been raped.

The man was denied bail in the Bellville Magistrate's Court and would appear in the regional court on June 4.

IFP Shocked by Gauteng Rape

The Inkatha Freedom Party was shocked that a convicted rapist out on parole had been allegedly caught raping a 15-year-old girl in Soweto, the party said on Wednesday.

"The IFP [in Gauteng] finds this incident very distressing and sickening, especially on the eve of South Africa celebrating Human Rights Day," the party said in a statement.

"South African citizens have become all to accustom[ed] to hearing stories of our women and children being raped and murdered."

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the girl was on her way home from school when the man, 30, allegedly took the girl, in uniform, to a nearby reservoir and raped her several times on Tuesday afternoon.

"Some people saw him and they called the police. He was caught."

Police found he was out on parole and had been sentenced to nine years for a previous rape.

The man would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The IFP said the incident showed the weaknesses of South Africa's correctional system and the vulnerability of ordinary citizens to degenerate behaviour.

IFP caucus leader Bonginkosi Dhlamini said: "What saddens the IFP-GP (Gauteng province) the most about these depraved actions is that they seem to be taking place in the most unfortunate places for our young girls and women.

"It deeply worries me that our kids now grow up in an unsafe nation, filled with depraved males, who instead of being guardians of youth according to our Ubuntu system, now relish taking innocence from our youth."

The party welcomed Gauteng legislature speaker's Lindiwe Maseko initiative of convening a dialogue on social cohesion and moral decay, which the IFP hoped would come up with programmes to deal with inhumane behaviour.

Police probe gang rape in W. Cape Taxi

Police are looking for a woman who may have been gang-raped with another minibus-taxi commuter in Cape Town at the weekend, it was reported on Thursday.

The Cape Times reported that the two women were alone in the vehicle after the taxi driver dropped the rest of his passengers off at the Melomed Hospital in Bellville on Friday evening.

"The driver told the two women that he had to pick up someone in Boston. When they arrived in Boston Avenue, the taxi stopped and three men got in," said Captain Frederick van Wyk.

When the taxi started moving again, one of the men pointed a gun at the women, who did not know each other.

They were blindfolded and forced to the floor of the vehicle, where one of the women was raped by all three men.

"It is not certain if the other woman had also been raped. The taxi stopped at the Karl Bremer Hospital offramp where the [raped] woman was pushed out of the taxi. She managed to walk to the hospital and ask for help."

Van Wyk told the newspaper the police did not know what happened to the other woman.

Rape Crisis spokeswoman Sarah Strydom said the occurrence of rape in taxis was "nothing new".

"The women don't only have to deal with the trauma of being raped, but often [of] being robbed too," she said.

Rape report generalised: BCCSA

The SABC's Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) must acknowledge on air that a news item it broadcast contained insufficient detail, the BCCSA said on Thursday.

The item concerned related to sex crimes in South Africa, the Broadcast Complaints Commission of SA (BCCSA) said in a statement.

The BCCSA gave its judgment on the matter on Tuesday. It had received a complaint from a listener about the news item broadcast in February.

The news clip was lifted from a story by the French news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP), and distributed by Sapa.

Translated into English, it reads: "According to official statistics, more or less 65,000 sexual crimes were committed in South Africa last year.

"According to police estimates, only one out of 36 cases of rape is reported. Recent research has shown that more than a quarter of South African men admit that they have raped a woman or a girl."

The listener complained that the story, which included information from a survey, did not adequately explain the methodology behind the survey or accurately report on its findings.

The study was conducted in three provinces and was based on the responses of men aged 18 to 49.

The complainant felt this information should have been included to avoid creating the perception that the study's findings encompassed all South African men.

The listener argued that the report breached the broadcasting code, as it was not fair, accurate, or properly contextualised.

RSG countered that it had no cause to question the report, as it considered Sapa, which issued the original AFP story, "a highly credible news agency".

"Overall, we submit that the complainant is making her own inferences through her interpretation of the item, and that there has been no transgression of the clause of the code in question."

The BCCSA found that the SABC was responsible for the final decision on whether news agency supplied content would be aired.

When reporting on a survey, it was important to include background about how the study was conducted.

"As broadcast, the sentence gives a proportion that amounts to an irresponsible generalisation and amounts to an unfair rendition of the facts," the BCCSA said.

It ruled that RSG had to broadcast an explanation to the effect that the item was generalised and that details about the study should have been included.

This needed to be aired on two news bulletins, at the same time as the original broadcasts, before May 22.
