Umlazi Rapist Jailed for 45 years

A man has been sentenced to 45 years in jail by the Umlazi Regional Court, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"A bogus security guard who was terrorising couples at Umlazi Mega City Park in 2011 and 2012 has finally been convicted and sentenced to a total of 45 years imprisonment," spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Sipho Gladman Mkhwanazi, 40, was found guilty of four counts of rape on Tuesday.

Mkhwanazi would pose as a security guard at Mega City Park in Umlazi, approach couples at the park, and threaten to arrest them, Zwane said.

He would assault the men with a knife, chase them away, and rape the women in nearby bushes.

He would then keep the cellphones and let the women go, Zwane said.

"In the last incident, in January 2012, a woman who was with her boyfriend was raped by the same accused in the bushes. When she was released by the accused, she saw a Durban Metro police van in the vicinity and reported the matter to them."

"They started their search in the bushes using their police dogs and the accused was found and arrested. He was found in possession of seven cellphones suspected to be taken from other victims he raped," Zwane said.

No further rape cases were reported in the area after his arrest.

KZN Prosecutor Appears for Rape

A KwaZulu-Natal prosecutor accused of raping a woman appeared in the Dundee Magistrate's Court on Friday, the NPA said.

The 38-year-old man would be back in court on July 5, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson said.

He was denied bail and would remain in custody.

A 23-year-old woman was at the Dundee Magistrate's Court with her boyfriend when the prosecutor, who may not be named until he has pleaded, called her into his office and allegedly raped her last month.

She told her boyfriend what had happened and the matter was reported to the police.

When the prosecutor found out he was under investigation, he allegedly offered the woman R3000 to withdraw the case.

Ramkisson said the man faced charges of rape, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.

"The NPA views these offences in a serious light and takes a zero tolerance approach to illegal activities, even if the accused is one of our own," she said.

Ramkisson said the man had been suspended from duty.

Man arrested after sister-in-law raped

A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his sister-in-law in Zola North, Soweto, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the man was visited by his wife's sister on Saturday night and the three enjoyed drinks together.

After drinking, the trio then slept in the same room together.

Makhubela said the man then realised during the night that his wife was in deep sleep and not moving.

"When he saw that his wife was not moving, he went to her sister and forced himself on her. The woman tried to fight the man but did not win," he said.

In the morning, the woman woke up and reported the matter at a police station.

The woman was taken to a doctor for medical examination.

Police then went back to the house and found the man with his wife.

"The wife was shocked when she learnt that her husband had raped her sister while she was in the same room," Makhubela said.

The man was arrested and charged with rape.

He will appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

KZN Man Jailed for Life

A KwaZulu-Natal man was jailed for life by the Mthunzini High Court on Tuesday for raping and killing a 14-year-old girl, police said.

Themba Khehlembane Nxumalo, 26, pleaded guilty to raping and murdering Lungelo Amahle Ntshangase in Jozini, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

Ntshangase was last seen on her way to school in February. Police found her body two days later in a bushy area in Kwagedleza. She had been raped and strangled.

Taxi Driver jailed for 105 Years

A Braamfischerville taxi driver has been sentenced to three life terms and another 30 years for robbery, assault, and raping several women, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

Vuledzani Ramulifho lured women into his taxi in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, by pretending he would take them home.

He then pepper-sprayed their faces, robbed them, and sexually assaulted or raped them.

Judge Naren Pandya said in the High Court in Johannesburg: "How would you feel if someone raped your wife or mother?

"Would you call your mother, sister, or wife a bitch."

He sentenced him to an effective jail term of 105 years -- three life terms for three of the rape counts, 10 years on four other rape charges, 10 years for 10 counts of robbery, five years for 13 counts of rape, and five years for escaping from lawful custody.

Jailing of Taxi Driver Lauded

The government on Thursday welcomed the 105-year jail sentence imposed on a taxi driver for robbery, assault, and raping 14 women.

"The ruling in this case is a lesson to other perpetrators who commit crimes against children and women in particular," government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said in a statement.

"And [it] sends a stringent message that criminal activities are not tolerated in this country, and the law will always take its course."

In the High Court in Johannesburg Acting Judge Naren Pandya sentenced Vuledzani Ramulifho to the three life terms and 30 years in prison on Wednesday. He committed the crimes in 2010.

Ramulifho lured women into his taxi in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, by pretending he would take them home. He then pepper-sprayed their faces, robbed them, and sexually assaulted or raped them.

The 105-year sentence was derived from three life terms for three of the rape counts, 10 years on four other rape charges, 10 years for 10 counts of robbery, five years for 13 counts of rape, and five years for escaping from lawful custody.

Cape Police Commander guilty of Rape

A former Melkbos police station commander has been found guilty of raping a woman and sexually assaulting another while both were in custody.

Michael Paulse, who held the rank of inspector when the incidents happened four years ago, appeared in the Bellville Regional Court on Thursday before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg.

The woman who was raped was in custody for alleged possession of drugs, while the woman who was sexually assaulted was in custody for alleged fraud.

Defence lawyer Shantell Morgan requested that Paulse's R1000 bail be extended, but prosecutor Ebrahim Adams asked the court to revoke it.

Adams said the R1000 bail had been set while Paulse was awaiting trial, but that Paulse, now convicted, faced a lengthy prison sentence and was likely to abscond if his bail were extended.

Sonnenberg extended the bail but increased it to R6000 as an indication of the gravity of the offences.

Paulse was unable to pay the extra R5000 and was led to the court's holding cells.

Sonnenberg said the incidents at the Melkbos police station had happened only days apart, while Paulse was the station commander.

She said he had been dressed in full uniform during both incidents but without his name tag.

Both victims had been alone in their respective cells and he had illegally permitted them to smoke, even supplying them with cigarettes, she said.

Because the sexual assault victim had suffered from a cold at the time, he had obtained Vicks medication for her.

Although she had protested that she could apply the Vicks herself, he had insisted on doing so for her, first rubbing her back and then her stomach, up to her breasts.

This amounted to sexual assault, she ruled.

Sonnenberg said Paulse had shown the rape victim how to use the shower in her cell and had specially obtained a towel for her.

He had then helped to dry her, even rubbing between her legs.

Sonnenberg said the sexual assault victim had obtained his name from one of his subordinates on the pretext that she had wanted to thank him for his kindness, and she had then reported the incident to a woman police official.

The rape victim had been afraid to protest at his presence with her in the cell, because "he was a man of the law", Sonnenberg said.

The case was postponed to July 29 for sentencing.

Cape Town Rape Accused Appears

A man has appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court in connection with the rape of four girls, the Cape Argus reported on Wednesday.

The 49-year-old's case was reportedly postponed on Tuesday until August 14, for the public prosecutions director to decide whether the matter should be heard in the Western Cape High Court or Cape Town Regional Court.

The Salt River man reportedly stands accused of raping four girls between the ages of eight and 11, between April and August last year.

He was arrested in September and released on R5000 bail two months later, on condition he live at an alternate address and not contact the girls.

Man released after 10 years in Jail

A man who was convicted for rape has been released from jail after serving 10 years, The New Age newspaper reported on Thursday.

Cedric Shezi, 39, was convicted on two counts of rape and received a life sentence.

After a decade in the Durban-Westville prison for allegedly raping his daughter, Pinky Dube, he was released on Wednesday after she admitted that she had lied about the rape.

"Dad. I am sorry and I love you," Dube told her father after his release.

Dube blamed her mother, Shezi's estranged wife, for coaching her to lie.

"She put me up to it. She made me to lie about my father raping me," Dube told The New Age.

Dube's mother died in 2007.

"I am happy that the truth has finally come out. But also, I forgive my daughter; she was very young at that time..." Shezi told the newspaper.

Well, Im glad the father is that forgiving. But the daughter is a complete idiot. She could have told the truth in 2007.

He is 39 now less 10yrs = 29 and I think the daughter was probably very young. The mother should have been around to face the music.

Yep, I understand the daughter was influenced badly. But the mother died in 2007, it couldn't have taken her 6years to realise she had done wrong?
 
The daughter was 8 at the time of the allegations. I read it somewhere earlier
 
who is to say that she is not lying now...?

Perhaps she feels that he was punished enough...
Surely they would have examined her or there would have been some kind of physical evidence...

just a strange case IMO.

Free State Rape Suspects Appear in Court

Two youths accused of raping two elderly women during a house robbery appeared in the Kestell Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The boys, aged 16 and 17, were released into the custody of their guardians after the case was postponed to July 19.

Bail was refused for two men, aged 21 and 22, earlier in the same matter. They are still in police custody.

A court official said a trial date in the Free State Circuit Court would be decided at the next court appearance.

The two sisters, aged 73 and 69, were raped in their home at the end of April.

Their attackers broke into their home at night and demanded money and weapons.

When the women told the men they had none, the robbers allegedly raped them.

The women were admitted to hospital.

Child Killer, Rapist Jailed

Margate man Bulelani Jula was given two life sentences by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday for raping and strangling a seven-year-old girl

He got a further 15 years' in jail for raping a 60-year-old woman.

Acting Judge Thoba Poya-Dlwati said that if the 25-year-old had been arrested soon after raping the woman in May, the little girl would still be alive. The girl was attacked on June 15 in broad daylight. She weighed 26kg.

Jula admitted he used vetkoek to lure the girl away from two friends and into a bush. He told her to undress, but she started crying. He strangled her while he raped her.

Prosecutor Denardo MacDonald said she must have resisted, as the post-mortem report indicated injuries to her genitals, arms, neck, and body.

Jula had two previous convictions for housebreaking and theft. He raped the elderly woman soon after being released early on parole.

Jula's counsel Ishy Khan asked for a more lenient sentence, as he was young and had prospects for rehabilitation.

Poya-Dlwati said she did not believe he had such prospects.

Cape Town man gets life for Niece's rape

A man has been found guilty of raping his 13-year-old niece, the Cape Argus reported on Monday.

The 48-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld, was reportedly sentenced in the Wynberg Regional Court recently to four life terms.

Magistrate Kalay Pillay did not order that the sentences run concurrently.

He was reportedly charged with four counts of rape, two in 2009 and two in 2011.

The man, a security guard, warned the girl to keep quiet about the rapes by reminding her that he had an axe at his workplace.

According to the report, he was first convicted in 2002 of trying to rape a minor and was jailed for six years.

He was paroled on December 4, 2006 and reportedly raped his niece a year after his parole period ended.

He intends to appeal his conviction and sentence.
