A 26-year-old woman was gang-raped and her cousin brutally assaulted in Meloding, Virginia, Free State police said on Monday.
The women were assaulted on Sunday night when 14 men broke into their shack in Mahala Park, said Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane.
The woman was assaulted and taken to a place near the railway station where she was repeatedly raped by six of the men, he said.
The other eight men assaulted her 29-year-old cousin in the shack.
"She was stabbed with a garden spade and taken to a hole that was also near the railway. They attempted to rape her, but she screamed."
Residents heard her and the men fled.
Both women were seriously injured and were taken to nearby hospital, said Mokhuoane.
Police were investigating cases of house breaking, robbery, rape and assault.

Life for Limpopo Rapists
Two men accused of raping children in Limpopo have been sentenced to life behind bars, police said on Thursday.
"Levy Abolenleng Sekoboane was sentenced in the Thabazimbi Regional Court following the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Thabazimbi during December 2012," said Col Ronel Otto.
On the day of the incident, the mother of the girl sent her to a local supermarket to buy groceries. While on her way back, Sekoboane appeared from the bushes.
He dragged her into the bushes where he raped her. He later threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
Meanwhile, Johannes Marintjie Sekgobela was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Mankweng Regional Court. He was accused of raping two boys aged 5 and 8 in 2011.
The two boys were playing in the yard of their neighbour when Sekgobela visited the owner of the house.
"He called them and locked them in a room. He raped both boys, thereafter attempting to buy their silence by giving them R1 each," said Otto.
He was arrested the same day after one of the boys plucked up the courage to tell his grandmother about their ordeal.

A police officer accused of raping a 14-year-old girl appeared in the Paarl Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning.
Warrant Officer Anthony Gouws, 41, who is out on R1500 bail, will be back in court on August 29.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the girl was raped twice at her home in April this year.
On another day, she was raped at the house of her alleged attacker, IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said.
Afterwards, he dropped the teenager off at school. On another occasion, the girl was picked up in a police vehicle and taken to a field where she was raped.
Dlamini said the girl was allegedly raped on numerous other occasions.
"The victim had reported the rapes to her cousin but she was afraid to inform her parents."
Her mother reported the matter after finding a message on her daughter's cellphone.

'Birthday Rapist' conviction welcomed
Justice Minister Jeff Radebe welcomed the conviction of the so-called "birthday rapist" Mlungisi Mtshali on Tuesday.
He was convicted on 122 charges, including rape, kidnapping, and theft.
"The minister also commended the young ladies who had the courage to come forward when the image of the accused was flighted on TV," his ministry said in a statement.
"This is justice manifestly seen to be done and we hope that he will receive a lengthy sentence that fits the crimes committed."
Mtshali was dubbed the "birthday rapist" because he reportedly told his victims it was his birthday and invited them to celebrate with him at a nearby restaurant or bar.
He would later ask them to accompany him, in a metered taxi, to fetch his sister or a friend in Hillbrow or central Johannesburg, where he lured the women into a hotel room and raped them.
He was arrested in Pietermaritzburg in March last year after it was discovered that he had been "erroneously released" by correctional services in February.
He was convicted in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the complainants, received life sentences for four counts of rape, and 10 years for another count of rape, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.
For two counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, he was given a three-year sentence, suspended for five years.
The sentences would run concurrently.
The man was convicted on Monday of twice raping the aunt who had raised him since childhood, his niece and another of his relatives.
He was also convicted of assaulting his two nieces with a spade and stabbing one of them.
"The accused pleaded not guilty on all charges," Naidu said.
DNA evidence linked the man to two of the rapes.

The officer, from the province's special task force, was arrested on Thursday, IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said.
A 26-year-old woman claimed he had approached her in a bakkie on August 3 at 3.30am and asked her for oral sex.
While she was providing this service, the man allegedly wanted to have sex with her, Dlamini said.
"When the sex worker refused, the man allegedly assaulted her and had sex with her without her consent."
The woman managed to escape from the vehicle and took down the registration number.
Dlamini said it was found that the bakkie belonged to the policeman.
The officer is facing charges of rape and assault.

Dlamini invited the girl and her friend for something to drink at his house.
"While they were drinking, he poured alcohol into her drink and forced her to finish it. Her friend ran away."
Dlamini dragged the girl into nearby bushes where he repeatedly raped her.
On Tuesday, the same court convicted and sentenced 22-year-old Mfanafuthi Ntombela to 45 years imprisonment on three counts of rape, said Mdunge.
Ntombela dragged women into bushes or sugar cane fields and raped them. The rapes were committed in 2009 and 2012.
Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police for the thorough investigations that led to the men's arrest.
"This is a victory to the SAPS especially in women's month."

The conclusion was that rape sickens people so much that they don't actually like to talk about it.
I actually made the thread to highlight the scourge and so that people could see how much of it is actually going on.
But I guess people don't really want to acknowledge how much of a problem it is in South Africa.

Man jailed for trying to rape cousin
A man was jailed for six years by the Nelspruit Regional Court on Wednesday for trying to rape his seven-year-old cousin.
A Sapa correspondent reported that Nathi Malope, 21, from Gemu Trust outside Hazyview, Mpumalanga, was arrested in January 2011 after his aunt caught him trying to rape her daughter.
Magistrate André Geldenhuys said because Malope had been in custody for two years and seven months since his arrest, he was sentencing him to eight years imprisonment, two of which were suspended for five years.
Geldenhuys said Malope's actions had changed many things in his aunt's family.
"For this reason, you are not welcome anymore at your aunt's house as she has a little girl and fears for her safety," Geldenhuys said.
He said the court heard Malope lured the girl to a shack in his aunt's yard. He was trying to rape her when the aunt caught him.
"If it was not for the child's mother, you would have completed the act. You were 18-years-old at the time... you should have known better."
Geldenhuys said according to the aunt, the child still suffered from the ordeal.
"She has repeated her Grade One at school. Due to this incident, she is not able to sleep at night. She even fears all male persons which means she has suffered severely."
The magistrate said the court had taken into consideration that Malope grew up in poverty and that his parents died at an early age.
"You were forced to move from one family member to another in order to make progress at school. You progressed to Grade Nine and were not formerly employed," he said.
He noted that Malope was drunk at the time and he still showed no remorse.
"You need rehabilitation as you are a risk in society. Only prison can rehabilitate you. You are not fit to work with children and your name will be registered on the register for sexual offenders."
