Got slow ADSL speeds? Who is to blame?

Exchange congestion is certainly a ongoing Telkom problem but many MWeb users are saying they get normal speeds when using other ISP accounts. How does Derek Hershaw account for this anomaly?

I've had the same with Telkom as my ISP.
I went from 4Mbs capped to 4Mbs uncapped about two months ago. Since then I've been unable to download anything more than 1Mbs. But I would get very close 4Mbs when i used another ISP.

The problem might also be only on Uncapped and not capped accounts.

Telkom screwed up big time opening new uncapped accounts in February and you're probably on DO Uncapped Basic (1Mbps) instead of DO Uncapped Premium (4Mbps).

I've also got that problem and I've got the 2mb capped account... speed in the evenings go below 1mb

Edit:
I'm with Telkom ISP

I thought Telkom ADSL was a 'best effort' service, not 'no-effort-at-all'! If you want Telkom to stand up and take note, then measure your actual line speed over a week or 2, then downgrade to the speed package just above your average(actual) line speed. Why on earth would you continue paying for 4mbps ADSL, when you rarely get anything above 2mbps! This is exactly what I did with our office ADSL, applied for 10mbps, but on install the line was only capable of just above 4mbps... so I downgraded it!

Classical Mweb diversion tactic. Their accounts are slow and Seacom is down, so instead of fixing it they message their mybb journalist on skype and get them to write an article that directs the attention to Telkom.

According to Mweb I had "congestion" due to Telkom. Yet if I changed to another ISP account the congestion magically disappeared.

I'm not denying that there is congestion at Telkom exchanges, but Mweb are being devious and misleading here by trying to pin any and all speed issues on the ADSL line instead of their own network.

I was with Mweb for about 2 years and suddenly in October 2012 things went really pear shaped and they were always blaming Telkom. I have now switched to Internet Solutions as of March and I have not had any problems.
It seems like Mweb have grown too big and cannot cope so they just pass the buck.

I agree here my local is fine on Mweb its the international that is slow.

+ 1 million.

Experienced this first hand the last couple of months troubleshooting slow connections of numerous Mweb clients. As soon as you connect with another ISP the "Exchange congestion" problem goes away. Rather think their problem is not enough IPC bandwidth or their shaping/throttling server going titsup.

Please brother, this article is not just because of Seacom.

Many ADSL users have been reporting poor speeds and degraded service levels (long before the problems on Eassy and Seacom).
Slow speeds are most definitely increasing, especially since the speed upgrades, and the blame is often misguided onto ISP's. Exchange congestion is a huge problem and it affects me terribly mainly after hours.
Mweb is the most solid ISP for me, and I have 3 backup accounts, where Web Africa performs the worst of the lot. I'm not saying mweb is solid for everyone but it performs the best for me, some others have been a joke.

Although Mweb is trying to pass the buck here, congested ADSL exchanges are a massive problem. I just can't understand how Telkom could let their network degrade so badly.
I have experienced congestion in two places where I live and it just gets worse while Telkom just continues to add more clients. The head of Telkoms wholesale network should be fired.

I would love to have a civilised one on one conversation with him.

My Mweb 1mbs Uncapped account has been perfect (until the cable break).
When i switched over to Telkom (5gb account), speeds are terrible, and this is pinging local servers (almost like i am on a 384 line again).

So what is preventing MWeb from building their own networks? Other than waiting for the LLU to be finalised? Money? Then why should the encumbent invest more?

I think the problem here is that nobody wants to take ownership of ADSL problems and everyone is pointing fingers.

For the last 6months I've had about 10% packet loss on my 2MB line. I've tested multiple ISP's and I have the same issue. Telkom techies say there is no noise on the line, no congestion at the exchange and pass the buck saying that its the ISP's fault. ISP's do the same and say that it's congestion at the exchange.

Who should the customer believe?

And what tests can be done to prove conclusively where the problem lies?

Can these be sent to the party concerned as proof the problem lies with them??

Hmmm, some of us warned about this reality when Mweb announced that they were "freeing the Web" a few years back.
We took a lot of flack back then, but it seems our reservations were justified.

I'm not discounting the Telkom ADSL problems.... that's a whole 'nother ball game.
But the problems with Mweb's uncapped were not unforeseen.
