So since Mweb is busy booting off their power-users and since their Uncapped products are nowadays not really uncapped and do have restrictions with regards to usage, many of us will look for a new home.

So any non-Mweb users could you please post your current ISP, the ADSL package and what your avg monthly usage and your experience is like?

Pretty much swaying between Afrihost, TI, Openweb (I think Axxess is out since they are with IS - or?)

I consider a "power user" a ADSL user with a >4mb ADSL account having multiple users with multiple devices in a household. In my case a household with 3 laptops, 6 tablets, 4 smart phones, online gaming, cloud based backups, plenty of streaming and large amount of downloads (Steam specials anyone?) blowing through 200-300GB a month is not very difficult.

I haven't had any issues thus far with TI. No way of telling how much I average in a month though. :o

Telkom is pretty good, haven't noticed any real restrictions or throttling. Streaming works well, been on 2Mb and now on 4Mb with them.

Hi, can I ask what you consider to be qualifies as a power user, from a bandwidth perspective per month?

Was previously with MWeb until early this year then I had an OpenWeb Gold 2 Mbps account. When my exchange was upgraded, I switched to a 6 Mbps Plugg account.

Both Plugg & OpenWeb are excellent and I would recommend both although OpenWeb is better if you want to download 24/7 non stop.

I had a Openweb trial account over the weekend but unfortunatly there wre other issues. On Monday/Tuesday untill the trial enede the Internet was bliss and back on Mweb it was initially ok and then went downhill a bit.

I am tempted to go back to Telkom as when I was with them I never had any issues but that was a capped account.

OpenWeb Gold, could (and used to) easily pull over 200GB p/m on a 1mb line ;)
If you're pulling 300GB p/m on a 4mb line, you're considered a light user at OpenWeb :D

EDIT: Actually...looks like I'll be pulling over 200GB this month (Just got a fat request list) :D

Thx, understandable for sure. I use a fraction of that, but have also not been getting what I am paying for in speed when i do use it. It was extremely frustrating.

Just seems there's not enough to go around really for everyone by the looks of it to offer quality service to all.

I am dying for the day I can fully utilise my smart tv as well, but everything on there buffers to dust, no matter who your isp is, maybe one of those 40mb lines for a kidney will work.

My afrihost 10mbps uncapped account does on average 300gb a month. Runs flat out when I use it... 1MB/sec on average. Super cheap as a bundle too

Hi Sneeky

Your issue with your speed is Mweb's shaping policy which is similar to Afrihost's new MTN policy as they shape the network as a whole. I suppose the concept is okay, but only if the powers that be do some forward planning and don't get caught out between the "getting it past the executives and ordering more IPC from Telkom and actually getting it implemented stage" - a few months or more! - and run out of capacity which then makes everybody suffer.

I would say a power user is one that downloads 24/7. I for one am at work during the day and let my line rest with the odd occasional browsing/email/netflix etc on some days. I have a 4mb line and can easily pull 9GB between 12-6am which (9x30=270) and with all the rest ave around 300GB.

All I can say is that this that I speak of is not with Mweb, been there done that...

PM me if you want to know more :)

EDIT: Reading further into the numerous new threads on this subject, I have a clearer picture of your situation, and am not convinced your issues are shaping but rather telkom.

The only thing i dont like about openweb, is because they don't do bundles...You score BIG time when on a bundle, cause then you pay +-R2**-00 for your 10mb Telkom-line... (ok...must admit...i'm talking CAPPED here)

So the options (all 4MB)
- Mweb Uncapped Premium @ R899 bundle - a no go
- Afrihost Business Gold Uncapped @ R897 bundle (anyone have any experience with this?)
- Afrihost Uncapped Platinum @ R897 (it seems that this one is AUP whereas the business Gold is not - any comments?)
- Openweb 10Mbps Gamers King (Downloaders Bling!) Uncapped @ R 596 (not a bundle - so with adsl-access/line rental about 1K)
- Telkom do Uncapped R 856 (cheaper than the others - any experience with it)?

So based on the above it is either (I am leaning probably towards Openweb or Telkom - have not heard much good about Afrihost/MTN lately):
- Openweb
- Telkom
- Afrihost Business Gold

If anyone has experience with any of the above and uses: VPN, online gaming, streaming (Netflix), Skype (incl video call), cloud services for backup (AWS / S3) - let me know which one of the above works well. I do use >300GB/pm. Most of the heavy traffic is between 11pm-6am.

The only problem with bundles are, if you have a problem with your physical connection then in my experience, you can get it sorted easier, as there is less of a tennis match with telkom/isp. You know the saying: you want something done right, do it yourself. People often dread having to deal with telkom, but I must say, and I'm sticking my head out now, but I say they have improved, I never had a line, the whole experience of ordering to link light on was a pleasure, well at least in my area. Call centre was always polite when things went wrong, you have to adopt the strategy of: you catch more flies with honey that **** approach, but I am of the opinion that when your line is with your ISP, they don't put in the same effort to nudge the dinosaur along.
