Telkom's free ADSL data: details

Read the article. Still confused. Am I right in thinking there are 3 promotions here

1) Double data
2) Free social media
3) Midnight free data

Correct? Isn't quite clear in the article.

I like the midnight thing...gives people a chance to download the entire interwebs without messing with everyone's experience. Bit of a schlep though to set up the scheduling.

If you currently have a capped account of 5GB (of data) and upwards you qualify for everything.
 
Wow, I wonder what has Telkom being taking or smoking lately?!! They continue taking or smoking whatever it is!! :D

On a serious note, it's really really cool what Telkom is doing, even if it is just for September only.

This promotion, it is not part of their Competition Commission settlement in any way?
 
let me just get this straight:
the 20 gig (backup) data I've got has been doubled to 40 gigs for a few months
Facebook etc ... does not contribute towards that cap.
Between 0:00 and 4:00 usage (any usage) does not contribute towards the cap

So long as I use less than 40 gigs of contributing data I have an unthrottled (but shaped) full speed connection
If I blow 40 gigs of contributing data I get the throttled data rate
??

Right if I am completely right when are you guys giving me a 10Mbs line rather than a 4?

Midnight to 6am.
FB, etc (except uchoob) - correct.
DL after midnight at full line speed as long as you have cap left (excluding uchoob).
 
I assume youtube is a big monster for Telkom

O and Telkom needs to get a dog :)
 
Cool now I know why my downloads I did after 1 am never counted against my cap :D love Telkom's new deals

Only way for me to check usage is on the SAIX page, but won't help me much now :(
 
Does this mean uncapped users are not "shaped" anymore? Do we get double the data as well before shaping kicks in?
 
no throttling and shaping are different things. I can't imagine this having any impact on shaping.

all only applies to capped data packages

These are promotions until the end of March. We will monitor utilisation and impact to the network, and if acceptable, they may become permanent features.

This promotion, it is not part of their Competition Commission settlement in any way?

No. These became possible due to our migration to our own network in February.

Good to hear. If you guys throw in even more promotions, it won't be long before someone runs to the regulator crying about predatory pricing, etc. :p
 
@Ranger: Is Telkom also going to apply this to 8Ta packages? I am on the 10Gb + 10Gb after hours deal as I cannot get an ADSL package due to cable theft. An ADSL line would be first price though.
