BBM for Android and iPhone delayed

No surprises here. Blackberry has become a useless entity. It is an organisation with excuses at its core ... it is allowed throughout the organisation as the leaders set such an example all the time. This is perfect material for a business school. Students will write papers on RIM/BB for ages to come.

Never on time. And they miss their own deadlines ... all he time.

You are right, and suddenly their servers cannot even handle a mere 1.1 million additional users.

I don't think we will ever hear about this app from RIM again, unless some company buys this business unit from them and continues with it.

and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.

Why, and is this a retarded way of data mining millions of email addresses which will be spammed to death at some point in the future?

People would be just as likely to hear about the download availability of the BBM apps for Android and iPhone on tech sites around the world as they would via their email address given to bbm.com.

It has nothing to do with their servers' load handling capabilities. Not sure where you got that from..

.

If you threw a party and 1.1 million guests unexpectedly showed up early how would you handle it. :)

I think the approach they took with ios users could have worked - releasing it to different regions throughout the day - can the same be done with google's play store?

Simple, if its was really an Android leak issue, continue iPhone roll out, or why not open your app on the market sothat less people grab the leak.

Also math:
Blackberry sold 3.3 million phones in an entire quarter, most of them was returning customers. Logic would dictate that 1.1 million users within a couple of hours is something the company normally doesn't see. So yeah there is that :D

Yes you can. The problem is that they did not even open the Android official ones for any region. If they did people would have noticed and waited for "their" time. Instead Blackberry gave a time 11h00 (GMT) and did not meet that time. So people googled and found more and more comments and links about a leaked application that was working, rest as we say was history.

Yep, I'd agree I'd be f**ked if 1.1 million people showed up......

However, if I want to invite all Android users to my party and give them all an app to use for free, I'd expect hundreds of millions....

Also, a gradual rollout would have been the solution, however, their servers were unable to handle the massive load. That is the reason why they stopped the rollout for both iOS and Android.

If their servers were fine and it was an Android problem, they would have only blocked that.

“lives up to expectations”.

Yeah sure, the irony is that you just showed how BB lives up to "expectations"

I'm just not sure why we are still giving these people attention.

Its obvious BB is just goating people.

Agree 100%

Wait, so they didn't expect demand? That is poor play on their part.

What else did you expect from BB?

their servers were unable to handle the massive load.
When BB's network went down a year an a half ago - I offered to donate a 8 port GB switch to them.

I'm happy to donate one of those HP microserver's that Esquire sell...

+1

They had over enough time to plan properly.

Agree 100%

Your all assuming that their servers can't handle the load and that a billion dollar company doesn't have the brains or analysts to predict the influx of users. Especially from Android users. Seriously..

I think there's something else lurking about that we've not been informed about.

And you assume that BlackBerry are a competently run company... It isn't. Just a typical screw up from Heins and co.

After the plummet of their shares, I highly doubt that they are a billion dollar company anymore.

Might have been a billion dollar company some time ago, after all the top executives jumped ship I am sure all the top tech people got the message and followed. I know I would, normally you find that only people who would struggle to get another job hang on after all the warning signs.

Also there is this:

We hope you weren't scheduling your weekend around the launch of BBM for Android and iOS, as BlackBerry has paused the rollout following a leak of the Android version. There were too many simultaneous users, the company says; with over 1.1 million active clients in the first eight hours, the messaging service just wasn't ready to handle the load. There's no mention of when the BBM deployment will continue, although BlackBerry is disabling the unofficial Android build to prevent future problems. Unless you grabbed BBM's iOS version in the first several hours, you'll just have to be patient.

If it wasn't because of server load why did they stop the iOS rollout? Esp after they blocked the Android "leaked" version:

Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.
