Windows Phone 8 update

Microsoft is updating its Windows software for cellphones to accommodate larger devices and make it easier for motorists to reduce distractions while driving.

For the first time, Windows phones will have a rotation lock function, so that the screen won’t switch back and forth between horizontal and vertical mode while you’re curled up in bed.

could not come sooner!!

hopefully comes to lumia 520 soon , through i only got amber the other day :(

There also will be a central way to close open apps. Before, you had to go into each open app and press and hold the back button.

No. That's actually to view all apps that are open.

Closing apps is a lot more frustrating than that. Like one forumite said - "you need to spam button for as many pages as you've opened in the app or web browser". Totally sickening.

True. This update couldn't have come sooner.

I have my eye on Windows Phone - already have a Lumia and I prefer it to the Galaxy S3. All works well...

Requires Update 2 (aka GDR2 ie 8.0.10322.71) :-(

Samsung Ativ handsets are still in the dark with Update 2. Naturally the Lumia's will get first dibs on the auto updates :-(

That why I love WP, everything just works. I have had zero issues with any of my Lumia phones, 800, 620, 925. The OS is rock solid.

That's Samsung's fault, I see that unbranded Ativ S phones have received the update. Bug your cellphone network to release the update.

The thing is mine is unbranded. I bought it at CNA on Vodacom pay as you go, but I have an MTN sim in it, so its definitely not locked to any particular provider.

I'm in contact with a guy at Microsoft SA, and he's contacted MTN on my behalf this week, so holding thumbs.

In SA (and most other countries) teenagers may not drive, so this is a stupid statement.

So if you're 18 you are no longer a teenager?

If it was bought on Vodacom prepaid, it's a Vodacom "branded" phone you will have to speak to them. AFAIK end September was the deadline for rolling out GDR2 to phones.

Unbranded phones are rare in this country.

Have a look here at all the different variants of the Lumia's we get in SA: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/wp8-availability-in-africa/

None of them are locked to the network, but they are still branded and will only receive updates once the cellphone network makes it available, even if you put in a different network's sim the phone is still reliant on the original operator to release the update for it.

Hopefully with MS making GDR3 preview available directly to users it is a sign that future OS updates might get released direct to the public like Apple does with iOS

Okay thanks Grim, I've just emailed the Microsoft techie I've been in contact with to ask Vodacom.

If Microsoft don't want a fragmented handset market like Android, I think this is the way to go.

The OS won't become fragmented as device makers aren't allowed to make changes to the core OS unlike Android. They are allowed to add their own enhancements to devices though. It appears as though they are splitting the OS updates from the device makers own firmware ie. Nokia Amber in future.

Nope. You may act like one, but legally you are not.

Under 18 is a child or minor in legal terms not a teenager, don't think we have any laws that reference the word teenager.

Teenager refers to people aged 13-19 last time I checked.

Same here still waiting patiently for the roll out to start, have checked the updated several times, nothing available(via wi-fi)

Vodacom better roll out this update. Give thumbs approval

I have both a Windows 8 phone and an android device. IMHO from a business integration point of view, the Windows 8 phone leaves android way behind
