Telkom uncapped ADSL warning

chill with gaming and streaming and only download on the graveyard shift ........ yeesh and I thought Mweb was bad, lol

so u mean Telkom never throttled all this time unlike axxess & afrihost??:confused:

Then why do they mention online gaming as being a problem?

Some idiot made a boo boo.

Despite the Telkom email, a spokesperson for the company dismissed the concerns raised about online gaming and video streaming.

I game, I stream & do the odd big download during the day but generally schedule for 0=6am and all is good.

SO as all the isp they cannot deliver a product and over sell, so they revert to throttling your connection which again you not allowed to use to it's fullest

From the TI Uncapped thread:

No, the people who wrote that are being taken to task for what they did, there are many factual inaccuracies in the communication that was sent to customers.

Then why do they mention online gaming as being a problem?

As far as I know, the message sent to customers was:
-Not vetted by the product managers
-Not vetted by anyone who knows the technical details of exactly how the product behaves (no-one in our team saw it before it was scheduled for distribution)

Please don't read too much into the message, there are way too many technical inaccuracies.

Wonder who these culprits are who always try and spoil the fun for everyone else.

Crystal Web is also battling with this problem where some of their customers have transferred in excess of 100GB per day, and they haven't even launched yet for the broader public.

Seriously, do you think it makes you cool for some reason to download such a lot of stuff?

These must be the same boys who ate all the food on the table at parties they were invited to while growing up.

This what I don't get. If I used 200/300GB for the month which never was in one session then why am I still being shaped/throttled? What difference will it make if I schedule my downloads during the hours Telkom suggest and yet use over their limit as an uncapped user, won't I be shaped/throttled?

So not the cheapest, the worst customer service, terrible peering issues and mweb style throttling rules... Remind me why you're my ISP?

Hang on a minute, if I have a 4 Mbps line and I have 4 people in my house watching YouTube, how does that affect Telkom? My line is still only 4 Mbps? Whether 1 person is watching or 4 people are watching, its still only a 4 Mbps line.

I thought the same thing. What worries me is the multiple connection issue they seem to have..

I do not agree with them that streaming, specifically, isn't throttled. Whilst I cannot complain one bit about gaming pings etc, shaping on streaming (Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Twitch for me) is very sporadic, ranging from barely braking 60KB/s to flat out 430KB/s. Between 18:00 and 22:30 (weekdays) it is a hit/miss whether streaming runs unthrottled.

Banana rules for a banana republic.

Are you guys the same idiots who try to be a good citizen by sticking to the right lane at 110km/h to prevent the guy behind you from speeding?

Crystal web offers uncapped internet. If they cannot sustain whatever people want to do with their uncapped, they are selling the wrong product.

This whole mentality that anyone that can go faster/download more than you is wrong is what's keeping this place in the 3rd world.

Erm... The speed limit is 120km/h. :) If you want to go 10km/h faster, then you better have an emergency. I get what you are trying to say, but your comparison is unjustified in this case.

It's an uncapped product, and then they complain when someone with a 10Mb line downloads for 1 day.

No thanks, that just seems like they are just another ISP over promising.

Traffic during the 0-6am period does not count towards your usage and does not affect your usage profile https://secure.telkomsa.net/titracker/ which at the end of the day is gonna determine when you get throttled.
Your daily usage including 0-6am still gets reflected on your user statistics http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/, say you do 5GB 0-6am & 1GB 6-24 your user statistics would show 6GB of usage for the day BUT only 1GB (0-6am) will be recorded for you usage profile will only take 1GB into consideration as the 0-6am traffic is effectively zero rated for it's purpose.

If you go have a look in the TI Uncapped Feedback thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/596707-Telkom-Internet-Uncapped-User-Feedback-(Pt2) you will see there are people that download 200GB etc without their usage profile showing any usage whatsoever.
