FPB earmarks R8m to censor online

Dictatorship. Censorship. Thats what this country is turning into. Seriously need to stand up against it together >_>
Im one for sick of this crap. This is doing NOTHING to help the country in any shape or form. Only to suck more money out of us and prevent the people behind it all from ever being talked about negatively. Because if you do "Oh this needs to be censored, can't have the rest of the world seeing this. Don't want people supporting freedom of speech and human rights."

We need to do everything we can to prevent this from happening. They're hiding behind the lies of trying to protect children from seeing things they shouldn't. It is absolute garbage. That is not their motive for this crap. And even if it was, it's a very poor way of doing things too.

What can we do?

What can we do?

Spread the word to people and have those people spread it to others. If you are able to, gather people's signatures, start a website, start a movement. And submit letters to them to say no to it. The more people we can get together, the better chance we have of preventing something like this happening.

We all have that power right now. You need only stand together and work together. You want to do something? Heck, I'll do what I can do to help. People need only message me if they wish to stand together against it.

Well they can't do shyte, if there is a proper notice that it is not suited to this or that group. It's physically impossible to police the internet so I will not worry too much once you start doing take down requests on information that should be seen, read ect, it has the tendency to blow up in your face, as people purposely rehost content to the point it would be impossible to take down every thing.

Censorship always never works unless you have some thing like the great firewall of china. If there is a will there is a way.

My worry is, with our government so deep up China's rectum The great firewall of china seems like a very real and possible reality for SA the China state

Not gonna happen, unless they physically change some laws and the constitution. PAIA ties in with constitutional rights for example, so not gonna happen unless they have the power to do so, which they don't.....;)

So there is nothing to worry about unless they get majority vote, then I would excise my right to clench my butt cheeks.......

This is hilarious. Hey FPB, ever considered that you don't have the manpower or legal jurisdiction to "censor the web?" Just ****off back into that apartheid hole you climbed out of.

Nothing different than Turkey, Korea and China trying to censor information. This will backfire one way or another.

In the end it will fall back to ISPs having to deal with takedowns. This will never be enforceable as people will just use VPNs to bypass distribution limits and trying to claim damages from Google or Amazon will be laughed off

Censorship occurs all the time. Heard of political correctness? And there are some classes of people one may not say anything critical against, even individually before one gets labelled with some -ism or -phobia because calling out a few is the same as "hating" a whole group or class of aggrieved. In the West at least elsewhere minorities don't count.

As for the Chinese censorship, the Chinese people themselves mostly want that. So that's going to stay. It's not like there was any big uprising over human rights abuses there. Chinese uprisings will only occur if an economic crisis hits China with unemployment and food prices going up. Turkey is probably similar. Arab spring --- what's that? How is ISIS working out for Arab Spring?

They did a pretty good job censoring Zuma's penis pic. Not.

They could ask Google to send them IP addresses of SA users who post videos on YouTube. Then correlate those addresses with the videos and send invoices to these content providers via their ISPs or directly. It's not about shutting down Youtube but gagging South Africans who post there. Of course a VPN would block that but many people won't use a VPN.

Mhm. Im really not standing for this attempt at censorship. If South Africa doesn't fight against it and prevent it (we really need more than 1500ish signatures..) then I think I am going to leave. I refuse to live in a country that will become a dictatorship.

MyBB's done an article on how many government requests Google & Twitter etc. has complied with so far. I think it was 0 iirc.

It's not the same thing. They were probably wanting access to email accounts, or peoples' identity. In this case they may request peoples' IP addresses if they originate from SA. Saying that there is such a law in SA. If google won't comply the could shame google on various UN forums and even prevent Google from doing business locally - which is stupid I know. But Google did comply with Chinese requests.

Sigh since when is being, political correctness, censorship, being politically correct,
Political correctness or political correctitude (adjectivally, politically correct; both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is an attitude or policy of being careful not to offend or upset any group of people in society who are believed to have a disadvantage.
So really why is it censorship, seriously ? Calling some on an idiot, or a douche bag or faggot, ect even if it's true, is not fair comment for example, but defamation, your intentions where to harm and shame the person. It's hardly censorship when the intention is not honorable to say the least.Don't know which stupid tree you fell from...(perfect example) ;)

Can you explain exactly without googling, what the Chinese are censoring ?

Can you write sentences which make sense? Of course it's censorship, it become self-censorship to avoid being accused of currently immoral behaviour by the immorality police. It shuts down open and free discussion of even innocuous ideas.

It's censorship because you have restrictions on free speech.

Calling someone an idiot is permitted. You can actually make fun of less intelligent people, they're not protected. Using derogatory language is hardly what was meant here. You just made fun of me, "stupid tree"?

What is an honourable intention? Who gets to decide what that is? It's a form of censorship. Either there is no censorship or there is. The wider it's made the less freedom of speech there is.

Google it. You think others fell from a stupid tree. Find it yourself.

Lets see how far they make it with their stupid plan

It's not get it into you thick skull space loser. Every one is entitled to be treated fairly, equally and with respect, yes calling some one a thief or stupid or whatever is fair comment, still doesn't make it right with in accordance the constitution and laws, you can still sue that person for defamation under civil law.

So your moronic argument makes it okay to call some one the K word, call my mother a Beatch, call RPM a box, because according to you not being able to do so is censorship. Not being able to speak your mind about the ANC would be censorship, not being able to to call some one K word is protection of his and your rights. It's not direct censorship is either protecting some ones right be it majority or a minority, we have a constitution which encourages freedom of speech and ideas, while still protecting others freedom of speech and ideas as well.

So no I don't in the least bit consider it censorship, if the intention is protection and promoting equality to the benefit of each and every South African, you really need to consider what real censorship is.Kindly prove to me that these restrictions imposed has a direct "negative" impact of your right of free speech, with consideration for others rights, beliefs ect.

I don't think you fell from the stupid tree, you had a rocket pack attached.
