Google Maps offline mode for search and navigation unveiled

YouTube offline was launched recently, Fitzpatrick said, letting users keep a video offline for up to 48 hours

Better than nothing! I have to chow my data again for a video I recently closed on another tab. Irritates me.

So we've already have a feature to save a snippet of the map for offline use. How is this different?

It's about ****ing time!

to work better in developing markets

Developing markets, my ass. Try drive from LA to Vegas - 90% of the trip has no coverage.

To currently save map data on Google maps for offline usage. Type "ok maps" in the search bar. The area on the screen will be saved.

Agreed ... should be a default feature long ago (offline maps) - Although there is a way to save a portion of maps offline, its highly limited imo.

Is it just me or does that plug look like the head of a male appendage with some stuff coming out.

There are a dozen extensions that let you download YouTube videos. I have Tubemate on my Android phone and tablet. It's a copycat YouTube app with a 2 click video download functionality. Unless you meant downloading already streamed videos? (That was so easy on Win XP. Everything was saved in the temp folder.) I suppose on mobile this can be useful.

This has the potential to break things a little. Will see when it gets rolled out, new features tons of new bugs

It doesn't allow navigation, If I remember correctly.

Instead of typing "ok maps" there will be clickable option. Don't expect much more. It will use it for maximum 30 days, as it does now.

Huh I've been having all along?

In settings offline areas.

Except you can now select the whole of Gauteng (195MB). The maximum downloadable map size is nice and big - Gauteng, the N3 and [most of] the Natal coastline in 3 maps.

Plus it's fully searchable. Streets, businesses, points of interest; looks like the whole ****ing database.

Only rolled out to me last week.
