FireStream - Broadband over Fibre in Sunninghill, Barbeque Downs & Waterfall Estate

Hi all,

I just wanted to make all interested parties aware that FireStream's Broadband and VoIP services are available in Sunninghill, Barbeque Downs and Waterfall Estate.

We are currently cheapest Broadband providers in these areas. Feel free to contact me directly in this regard or alternatively do so via our website (www.firestream.co.za).

One of the big misconceptions in Sunninghill at present is the topic of whether the Sunninghill fibre is "open access" or not. The fibre is owned, managed and supported by MetroFibre Networx (MFN). or The fibre is 100% open-access provided that an ISP has been authorised by MFN to deliver services over the fibre. FireStream has received this authorisation from MFN.

So to be clear, you are not simply reselling MFN packages?
If so, any chance of lower speeds, capped packages or voice only services?

That is 100% correct. We are currently the only independent ISP authorised to deliver services over the MFN infrastructure. The other "provider" currently available on the Sunninghill/BBQ Downs MFN network are simply a reseller of MFN's.

We would happily offer lower speeds but MFN presently do not currently offer less than a 10MB service. If this ever changes, we will adjust our product offering accordingly. Capped packages will be available in the next few months. Our VoIP services are a value add service and thus requires a Broadband service to be taken before and VoIP service can be enabled.

So its not really open-access i.e. I cant go to another ISP other than yourselves and get service from them?

When will it be open to the other ISP's?
 
Hi Mark,

There is a complex in Barbeque Downs called Sunningate which is in Montrose Avenue. Do you guys have infrastructure in it?

Hi The_MAC,

It most certainly is open-access but it is up to individual ISP's to approach MFN in order to be approved to deliver services on their network.

I'm afraid I cannot comment as to when other ISP's may or may not decide to offer service via MFN.

Hi D3x,

MFN only do the Sunninghill/Barbeque Downs fibre. Waterfall Access Networks (WAN) do the Waterfall Estate network, hence the different offerings.

FireStream is pleased to announce that it we will very shortly be offering Sunninghill & Barbeque Downs residents a 5MB Fibre to the Home (FTTH) service over the MetroFibre Networx fibre infrastructure. The cost for this new uncapped, unshaped, symmetrical 5MB service will be R560p/m.

Damn that's a great entry level deal.

Any plans on expanding to Midrand?
 
Got my 10mb fibre from firestream yesterday and the speeds are awesome.

International speeds to London (Vodafone UK) via speedtest.net
Ping - 167ms
Download - 10.93Mbps
Upload - 10.40Mbps

Local speeds to Johannesburg (CellC)
Ping - 6ms
Download - 17.21Mbps
Upload - 15.89Mbps

I am certainly not complaining but can anyone know why I can burst beyond 10mb?

I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying your broadband experience from FireStream. It seems like the fibre provider allows users to burst hence the reason why you are getting speeds in excess of your 10MB service. We wont rate limit you on our end as we have plenty of IP transit capacity available.

I'm loving my firestream connection at home. The speeds are insanely fast. Big thumbs up.
 
Looked at their web site. Why is a 10mb line monthly fee different for Waterfall and Sunninghill!

MetroFibreNetworks own the Sunninghill Fibre and Smart Village owns the Waterfall Fibre. Each charge ISPs (Firestream) different rates.

A slight correction if I may. Smart Village are the operator of the Waterfall network but they are not the owner thereof. Waterfall Access Networks (WAN) are the owners of the Waterfall fibre network.

Services will be available Fourways & Douglasdale before mid 2016. We will keep this forum updates on any and all new developments.
