How WhatsApp keeps your messages secret

He has long been a proponent of Signal, and I see no reason he'd change now. The fact that WhatsApp uses an implementation of the Open Whisper Systems encryption is encouraging, however, one must ask how it was implemented, and what access WhatsApp or their parent company retain in this.

Yes, the public-key and symmetric-key graphics are just to show the gist of how it works.

WhatsApp says it doesn't store messages after they are delivered.

Tin-foilers keep forgetting - Facebook doesn't want your messages, they want access to your phonebook. Contact information of all those people who aren't on FB yet.

Very true and extremely invasive. I have removed Facebook from my phone many moons ago. The main reason I removed it was due to Facebook harvesting any new contacts I have added to my phonebook. People I deal with on a business level started to show up on the suggested friends section.

It doesn't stop there though, Whatsapp seems to do the same. I gave Whatsapp permission to access my phone book, not share it with Facebook. I find this a breach of my privacy and I am sure somewhere in their hidden tos they say they will share your data.

LinkedIn also harvests your data, but on another sneaky level, so does Twitter, or at least they used to.

These social platforms should be more clear on what they are sharing and should give you the right to block or disable such. The only way this can be avoided is by not using any of these social apps.

Yes, and all my contacts are available via whatsapp...

And I'd be inclined to believe them, as you can no longer restore messages from them, you can only restore from a google account backup or local on device backup now.
 
Im glad that my messages to my wife reminding her to buy milk will now be safe from interception.

Yeah.

A lot of us use messaging services for more than just that.

Which is why I use whatsapp and Signal. For different things.

It might be true, but the first things the app asks is to backup my all messages on cloud. I missed this opportunity for obvious reason. Not many people will say yes.
