The Google Pixel is an awesome smartphone

Phones are way too expensive and hard to justify coughing up 10k to make phone calls, emails, music etc.

That's why I'm waiting on a surface phone. Spend 10k+ on a full blown phone with a chip that's catching up on the Intel core m and full Windows 10.

Rumor is its going to be an Snapdragon ARM chip with software x86 emulation for x86 apps, no intel. But I really, really hope you are right as I will also then get one then as it will be awesome. Just think you will have a gaming PC in your pocket.

So much agreement. How can a phone cost the same as a fairly high-end laptop?

Why would it not? Putting all that technology into such a small form factor does and should command a very big premium

This is the only phone I would consider other than an iPhone. Quite interested in Google's move towards tighter integration between custom hardware and software. That has always been the biggest downfall with their software. It was made to work on generic hardware.
The next version is going to be very interesting and could well be the phone that I replace an iPhone with

no not really.. but if its Samsung and Apple, its basically the cost you pay for their name

Just the costs of the hardware, negligible. Having dev's build on top of Android, distribution channels, providing support and spares etc etc. That is where the real costs are.
One needs to factor those in.

You can get a cheap chinese phone that works (and looks) like a Samsung or an Apple, but the moment it breaks or requires , say , a new battery, or when the release new version of the OS (which you dont get), that is when you find out why you pay a premium.

I learnt the following from this article:

1. Being CEO comes with the perks of calling in small favours :p
2. The said esteemed CEO hasn't lost his touch in the writing skills department. Enjoyed the read.
3. The MyBB Editor should therefore not be too complacent
4. I am available, though, if you ever need a replacement editor, as I see your establishment might pay well :)
5. There is hope that one day in the very distant future, if my Note 4 gives up the ghost, that the Google Pixel XL may well be the most suitable replacement.

Those days are long gone... :) People are buying alot of other brands, besides Apple and Samsung.

Not so much. Those two are still the biggest.
And the Google Pixel hardware is also a new Brand.

And paying for a brand applies to everything in life, not just phones

Its mindset, that you have to get a Samsung or Apple because its quality. Back in the day yes, today and going forward not so much. We have seen the numbers, and while Samsung and Apple still dominate, their is definately a shift in the market with regards to other brands. GFK numbers show this as well, but people play it safe, and thats understandable as well

The Chinese brands have proven to us that were being shafted by the likes of Samsung and Apple.

The basic utility on all these phones are the same. You might get a little extra battery power but that's it.

No, quality is but one aspect of a brands appeal (Albeit an important aspect).
