On the 5th April 2018, Husqvarna South Africa launched their “Real Street” range to selected journalists and Cape Town’s finest at the Youngblood Arts and Cultural Development Gallery in Cape Town’s City Bowl district. What we learned that evening about Husqvarna’s new and exciting street range is as followed:

The names
The Husqvarna VITPILEN (Swedish for “White Arrow”), much like the iconic Silverpilen in 1955, opened up a new segment for Husqvarna Motorcycles along with the SVARTPILEN (Swedish for “Black Arrow”), which shares the same design approach, but with distinctive colour differences and slightly more rugged styling. The overall design concept has been interpreted in the form of VITPILEN 401, VITPILEN 701 and SVARTPILEN 401 product models and is now joined by the recently presented SVARTPILEN 701 concept. The approach is a testament to the clean and cool Swedish simplicity of the classic Silverpilen concept.

Simple. Progressive
These bikes are an apparent paradox, in that they are incredibly simple in their design and reduced of unnecessary excess. However, they are progressive and something new to the world of motorcycling. The latest technology has been used whilst embracing the purity and simplicity of how motorcycles used to be.

The new gateway to motorcycle culture
The approach was not to make a bike for a certain type of person but rather to make one for any kind of person. Thus, opening up an entirely new gateway into the world of motorcycle culture. A culture that is accepting, non-specific and purely for the love of being on two wheels, seated on a tiny seat and behind a set of handlebars.

Where you decide to go, how you decide to ride and who you are is irrelevant, it’s equal. You can truly be whoever you want to be, but with the freedom to explore your city in an entirely new light.

Vitpilen 401
The Husqvarna VITPILEN 401 marks the start of an entirely new segment in the motorcycling world, it is free of excess and reduced to its simplest form. This bike aims to appeal to an entirely new generation of motorcycle users. It’s for those less interested in the hype and hyperbole of modern day motorcycling and who prefer a simpler, more style-orientated approach. Its technologically advanced 4-stroke single-cylinder 375 cc engine is housed in an incredibly stripped down yet progressive layout that offers excellent performance without boasting about how racy it is. The basic idea and inspiration behind the bike was to create something completely reduced, while turning heads from an aesthetic point of view. Ultimately, it’s as accessible as a motorcycle can be, it’s honest and can be ridden by anyone with the will to learn.

In terms of style and design, the VITPILEN 401 is reduced to nothing more than what is absolutely essential. With respect to the past, it is simple, obvious and forward-thinking in terms of the technology used, as well as the entire package itself.

The way in which the volume was sculpted is extremely sleek and pure, forming clean and soft lines. By contrast, the shape itself is very intentional and well-defined.

It is most certainly very approachable and accessible. Dynamic thanks to a more engaging position, which is far forward enough to be in full control, yet remains relaxed thanks to its clip-on handlebars and natural ergonomics.

The surface treatment (the way in which the bike was sculpted) is distinctive in that there’s a contrast between the softness of the design and the extremely defined shapes on the tank. This forms very precise elements and fitting lines of the surface. Underneath, it is fully-equipped with premium components including LED front and rear lights, WP suspension and a modern fuel-injected motor, amongst other features.

The bike was designed to be as simple to ride as possible, without all the unnecessary electronics and rider assistance. It is designed for a ‘sit down and enjoy the ride’ experience.

Wait a minute. This is the lawnmower company...
Indeed. Gardening and forestry equipment are what they are best known for.

They also expanded quite a bit into the construction industry. Everything from tile cutters to diamond coring tools. We have several of their equipment.

I'm test riding the Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 at the bike fest.

Yeah, but they were bought out by KTM at some point. The 401 bikes have the same engine as the KTM Duke 390 and the 701 has the Duke 690 motor in it, but dressed up for the hipsters.

Also, you'd expect the Svartpilen to be bigger than the Vitpilen, but the reverse is true.

I saw these on Jay Leno's garage a few weeks back and based on Jay's comments I'd take the bigger one for a spin if I was in the market for a single..

These look pretty cool actually, especially that 401.
I know it's par for the course down in CT, but are you allowed to be a hipster in JHB? I could start growing and grooming my beard now in anticipation of getting one of these.

Please give us some decent feedback :D
I didn't like the riding position at all. I prefer an upright riding position. I think I should have rather have ridden the black one as that one has an upright riding position. It does look nice and different.

Oh lord, this post is just perfect.

While a change of position might help, possibly you just need a bit of lube for comfort.
