Acsa is calling for public comments and proposals by 6 June, for the renaming of not only Cape Town’s airport, but also East London Airport, Port Elizabeth International Airport and Kimberley Airport as well. Four possible names have already been put forward: Nelson Mandela, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Robert Sobukwe. Fairly transparent attempt to drive traffic to the site linked, not sure why this needed to be posted? There are several threads discussing this already.

Lets see, convicted terrorist / thief (sorry, freedom fighter), Sisulu, unrepentant murderess/ thief, Sobukwe.
Out of the two, I'd probably lean towards Sobukwe.

None of the airports need a name change though, so f.ck that noise.

I wonder what the mood was like when it was opened back in the 50s and named DF Malan. Jubilation? This while majority were being shipped to the wastelands.

Not that I support the renaming. I don't, but yeah.

Why can't we just keep it the same as the city name? Is it so difficult to have the main airport share names with the city?

They'll just call it Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Cape Town International Airport.

Spain already has Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport and France Paris - Charles de Gaulle Airport :D

Not that I agree with the change

I'm flying to Albertina Sisula Airport... Dunno where the heck that is but oh well, here I go lol

Why don't we just leave the names as Cape Town International, Johannesburg International, Durban International etc. Jeez does everything have to have a name change to some former political person? Why not the Hashim Amla International or Ernie Els International?

I still refer to the respective airports as JHB PE and CT airport. So much easier than that waka waka or whatever else that is proposed. Hmph!

Do you believe the majority in South-Africa are capable of making intelligent decisions looking back at their choice of government over the past 20+years?

Then I guess SA is populated by fools (pre and post '91 voters)

As far as PLZ goes rather build a new airport and give that one the new name.

Just wait for the day you are labelled a racist for referring to a airport on it's old 'city' name...

Tempers flared during a public meeting regarding the renaming of Cape Town International Airport on Monday.

Members of the public were invited to the airport to voice their opinions on the Airports Company South Africa's (ACSA's) proposed renaming of the airport, under the Transformation of Heritage Landscape Government Programme.

Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who arrived in their trademark red regalia, strongly supported the suggestion that the airport be named after late struggle hero Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, while members of the Khoi community were in favour of the name Krotoa - after the historic Khoi figure.

The meeting quickly dissolved into chaos when member of controversial organisation Gatvol Capetonians, Ebrahiem Davids, said: "Winnie Mandela was never part of this country."

EFF members started chanting and took over the meeting.

"We will not allow anyone to divide us. We are all here because of Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela," shouted one EFF member to thunderous applause.

I do not want an airport named after someone complicit in burning people alive.

Wtf is wrong with calling it Cape Town Airport.

It was named DF Malan before...

/shrug

Disclaimer: I don't support name change
It was changed to Cape Town International, even the FF+ supported the neutral name change back then. I support the current name, the trade name is neutral and internationally recognised. The only purpose to change it today is political.

But yah, how long until the City of Cape Town municipality is under consideration to be changed?

His reason is as absurd as the name change
