Hi folks

As you might know MyADSL has grown substantially over the past two years. This growth initially forced us to move the site overseas, but thanks to a generous sponsorship from Afrihost we were able to move the site back to South Africa. Unfortunately hosting fees are not the only cost that the site has to cover. The day to day running of MyADSL can be costly at times, but luckily we were able to cut even over the last few months. We would however like to ensure that MyADSL’s future is secure and that we have some additional funds to provide you guys with a better service.

We are in the privileged position that advertisers are asking us for additional advertising space, and I would therefore like to ask your permission to make a few extra advertising slots available. It will definitely be non intrusive advertising (no DHTML effects etc.)…simply a way for companies to let you guys know about their services. The benefits of these additional funds will go directly back into MyADSL!

Can you please give your views on this matter.

Regards,

RPM

I'm for it, most sites one visits these days have far more advertising than MyADSL so I certainly won't find a few more ads intrusive, especially if it means the continued existence of the site!

I would think that avertising on a site such as this is a good idea for service providers and us. We get to see the latest offers and they get feedback, well bitching about them should they fail to provide in what they offer :)

Clearly, advertising would seem to be a necessary evil. I would constrain the advertisers to nothing more than a non-intrusive linked text ad of a few lines, however (very similar to and along the lines of the Google text ads), and setup a frame on either the left or the right of the screen for this purpose. Doing it this way will stop the garish jpegs/gifs and clearly demonstrate the independence and non-commercial endeavours of the forum - an equal facility offered at a flat rate to all. Hopefully the facility will also prompt advertisers to improve the quality of their advertising - nobody will want to read screeds of bumph (much like this post, I suppose!).

The ads at the top of the forum I am fine with - all I am worried about is making the ads look invasive on the forum - it could 'scare' away prospective members, I am all for it - just not in the middle of a thread! :p

As long as the ads are non intrusive that should be fine. As mbs stated - advertising seems to be a necessary evil. Would rather go without the ads, but in our situation - they are important for the upkeep of the site. From my side, all I ask is that you are still very careful about who you allow to advertise here. Out of all the ads you've had on myadsl, I only have a problem with one of them. ( It's enough to put me off buffet for life  )

Go for it! Do what you have to do, but keep this site running.......

Please keep the forums clean, though.

But then, maybe you can allow some ads (relevant to braodband) on the forum as well but on the condition that these people participate in threads releated to their products.

Advertising is needed and I support it as well. I am sure you will be able to do it neatly and without scaring anyone away ? Is there any other ways that MyADSL can be assisted in keeping it going ?

Don't mind the adds, especially if it is related to ADSL/PCs/Hosting etc. I would just suggest allowing only certain types of adds, for example no gambling, porn etc. which is sure to drive some folks away. But I guess that is obvious anyway.
Hope you break more than even in future, you deserve it for such a great site.

Supply and demand: If the demand is greater than the supply, increase the prices until it balances :-)

Pity Telkom also uses this theory: Reduce supply, and increase the price so hte reduced supply is met.

Serious: Vodacom, MTN, iBurst and Sentech and even Telkom should be allowed to pay their dues.

Go for it.

Wouldn't a poll work better than a list of replies for a topic like this?

perhaps Calmettes would be interested in a banner on the iBurst section?

Hi folks

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I can assure you that the advertising will be discreet and that you will certainly not be bothered with any DHTML effects, pop-ups etc. The idea is simply to give companies a way to inform us about their offerings and in the process benefiting the site. As I have mentioned before the proceeds will definitely benefit our members…not only in keeping the site alive and improving on it & increased action to improve broadband, but also in the way of competition prizes, free promotional items etc (I have recently purchased a stack of Ster Kinekor Junction Movie Vouchers, so expect a few handouts :-)

Please keep the comments coming. As always your feedback will govern this site’s direction.

Regards,

RPM
