International hosting just does not make sense

I think international hosting makes perfect sense - its cheaper for me to host a site overseas. Simple really.

Hi Bwana

The article focusses more on why it is neccesary to host internationally and what can be done to remedy the situation...

Fair enough but I dont believe competition alone will alleviate the situation. At least not to the point where prices are competitive with those offered overseas. We need a regulator that is allowed to get on with it and live up to its mandate.

Edit - spelling :)

In response to the title of this thread: Hosting abroad makes perfect sense as its MUCH MUCH cheaper, you get more features, ping rates (for me anyways) are not that much worse and it makes a statement: up yours Telkom!

The thread title is however deceiving in the context of the article. I like the article but its nothing new to most of us. Lets hope it informs the uninformed and that Telkom, the regulator and the government take heed.

Yeah, lets hope someone takes note.

I find it quite ridiculous that I'm forced to host overseas because Telkom has the country by the throat.

But the major issue is that local surfers now access ‘local’ content on international servers. This means that international bandwidth, a scarce and expensive resource in SA, is being used for this traffic.

Pity the article doesn't mention that with Telkom's new capping policy, local bandwidth is as expensive to access locally as is international. :(

I think we need these kind of articles to keep coming, some day somebody might get annoyed, in a good way and start doing their job. Does anybody know if there's any news from Papi with regards to prices?

local hosting

i will never use local hosting unless prices go down! as for local trafic being cheaper.....it won't help. i have only visitors from overseas on my side so need the international bandwith.and i'm sure there are many people like that. at the moment i pay R200(and they even have cheaper options like R100 a year) a year for hosting my site on a good server in europe.i have everything i need...mysql,php, etc.
www.host247.pl i highly recomend it

What we see is that the Government would rather rake in the Telkom profits through their controlling share than hand out those profits to local hosting companies. Well, I can't but agree with those that see that we live in a global society. If my money is going improve the life of some US citizens then so be it. Who knows where you will be living in 5 years time. It's something that we as local citizens can do little more than complain about.

Having said that.... I feel for people who have talent and want to make money from this industry locally. It really sucks.

I agree that it is difficult to be patriotic under the circumstances. p.s. What language is that? (sorry - my ignorance)
ciao

Its simple really the better the service the cheaper the price the more customers are going to gravitate towards that product.....

I got quoted 11 grand/month for a dedicated option by one of the bigger companies in SA, the same thing costs me 1500 in the states

Pure and simple decision......

YOU ARE 100% RIGHT!!!!:) took me few minutes to set it up. they send u a letter asking you to send them your log in name and that is it:)

Yea i pay R650 per YEAR for ASP.NET 2.0 hosting including SQL Server dbase + 1GB space [and all the other web based tools and services] on USA based servers. In SA you pay that per MONTH!

Real competition should do the job. :) If not the regulator should (as is necessary now) step in. My opinion.

I have been looking at local hosting options for a small business, and i have been shocked with the high prices. A company like yahoo offers prices that are a mere fraction of those charged in SA. One wants to support local companies, but in this case it would be suicide.

Can anyone recommend other good international hosting services?

Even in countries where there is plenty of competition they still have a strong regulator. There needs to be someone empowered to look after the average Joe. Market forces wont necessarily do that.

Go Daddy and Powweb - but there are loads of em.

The local hosts need more features in addition to increased transfer limits.

Call me a madman, but surely the situation of South Africans hosting in the US can be imitated here, whereby with low enough prices people from other countries choose to host in SA?
