Bye For Now…

As many of our users may know, QuickShare is run at a major loss to the team but we do it because we absolutely love what we do. For a long time we have made our fair share of sacrifices to keep things running but with the incredible growth we have experienced over the last few months we have arrived at a place where we cannot keep things going with the current cost of bandwidth.

We are aware of the Seacom development and like many of you out there, we read every news article on the topic with bated breath, hoping to mine a little more hope out of the development. Having said that, it’s also more than likely that it will take a while before the cheaper bandwidth starts trickling down to us.

It’s extremely important to us that we maintain a high level of integrity with our users and that people who rely on QuickShare for backups or people who have given links to files in their CVs (and similar scenarios) can always access their data. After giving it a lot of thought, we have decided to do the following:

Our Temporary Solution

* We have disabled new uploads on all accounts while we continue to look for new ways to sustain QuickShare. Users will still have access to all the data that they currently have on the site.

Our Plans for the Future

* As the cost of bandwidth becomes more manageable, we will open up full functionality on the site again.
* As things progress even further, we plan to offer bigger (free) storage space and eventually introduce paid accounts to accommodate those who want greater storage and flexibility.

Other Thoughts

We ask for the support of all our users during this time. To give you an idea, even though we get our bandwidth and infrastructure at the most competitive prices available, our bills are quickly approaching the R10,000 per month mark. As mentioned earlier, this comes out of our own pocket and offers no return at this point. We have done everything we can to keep things going.

We knew this might happen, but we’re passionate about the idea and wanted to give it our best shot. We will be back and when we come back, we’ll be better, stronger and faster than ever.

We will be updating users from time to time using our newsletter option. To stay informed with developments on our side please make sure you’re subscribed to the newsletter in the My Account (requires user to be logged in) section of QuickShare.

Bye for now…

awww man.

Every single option we have had in South Africa for file hosting have all closed because of bandwidth costs!

The cheapest storage option in SA is the seagate 1TB HDD and the most reliable and cheapest b/w is DVD-R by mail or by HDD by friend.

I need to upload my new mix are there any other local places as I am capped...? :(

ill host your mix on my ADSL line if people can handle sharing my 50k upload :P

You could simply post to usenet ;) Check out PowerPost (Guide here), then just put in the address of the local news server that you use and upload it. I'm not 100% if it will then be cached locally on the server you uploaded it to but it should. The port is the same as for downloading, 119.

You will also need to find a group to post to. Pick a big group (one with many posts) and make 100% sure that you do NOT post to a group that does not support binaries. EG post to alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.dance or alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.electronic etc

Make sure you give a very descriptive name to the upload or post it with a NFO file telling people all the technical details on quality. Then wait for it to come up in a usenet search engine, generate the NZB and your mix should be available to people, on local, for 200+ days :)

The downside of this method is that if you are worried about RiSA/copyright infringement then uploading like this is apparently not a good idea. I am not fully aware of the legal implications of doing this so check that out before proceeding! (My little disclaimer )

AY that's CONFUSING I just want a simple download from a browser to share with forum members... And I have no international...

upload to an adress i give you.. then they can DL from it.. i could host your mix til the end of the month.. to give you some time to find an alternative :)

File Uploading Reactivated Whoo hoo!

Dear garyvdh

Over the last few months running QuickShare has been one of the most stressful but also one of the most rewarding experiences. While we'd all clench our wallets as the bandwidth bills would soar, we'd inevitably be reminded what an awesome community our users are and hearing from various people who use our service for a host of important things made it all worthwhile.

But more to the point...

The upload area has been reactivated, although we have had to lower the upload limit to 10MB per file. We know this is small, but it's the compromise that allows us to at least have some upload functionality. Be assured that we're constantly looking into new ways of upping the quotas and removing limitations.

We've also decided to introduce a donate button. If you've found QuickShare to be beneficial and would like to contribute, we'd really appreciate it.The link is available on QuickShare, but you can also find it here.

We're always keen to hear from our users, so if you have any feedback you're welcome to reply to this email.

Lastly, we just want to thank all our users who gave feedback on our last blog post.

Kind regards,
QuickShare Team

Well done guys!

That is great. :D
