Ubuntu's Karmic Koala: What to expect

Baie mense wag in spanning vir die ene :D

Ek gan dit ok 'n probeer gee, maar sal moet Windows hou, baie van die programme wat ek gebruik is Windows only (soos ongelukkig Excel 2007)

Dink ek wel upgrade van WinXP na Win7 toe, en dan Linux ook run :D
 
I wonder if they've managed to sort out the Intel graphics issue which caused chaos in the 9.04 release, and whether they gonna be using kernel 2.6.30 or 2.6.31....

Should be an interesting release
 
Windows 7 is proving to be a good successor to both Vista and XP.... but from what I've heard about 9.10, it will be the same for 9.04.....

I just hope they've managed to sort out the 3G issues that plagued 9.04 from the start (it was supposed to support 3G without any issues).
 
Linux is still years away from being able to be competition to Windows. Tooks me more than 12 hours to get a simple program installed and working in Linux while in windows it is install and up and running in minutes. And I am a computer professional with 20 years experience. How do expect non computer professionals to be able to use linux. Like the aricle said. Nice geek toy!

Windows user does not equal computer professional.

Just because someone battles to install a program does not necessarily mean it is the OS's fault. I mean IMO often there is something going on with the OS that is to blame, but a lot of the time it isn't, it is just badly written programs or scripts.

I ask you this: If a Windows-based application comes with a bad installer or no installer and as a result you battle to install it is it Microsoft's fault?

Back on topic I can't wait for 9.10, I'm still on 8.04 because I found 8.10 sluggish and 9.04 was great, but it is too much hassle to upgrade for not enough benefit, but with 9.10 there is so much to look forward to.

One thing I'm surprised about is that the adoption of ext4 as the default wasn't mentioned, in some tests (if I recall correctly) I've seen a 43% improvement over ext3. I hope the Canonical crew haven't put that on hold.

The only thing Ubuntu has going for itself is that it is free. Currently using Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this PC. Sure Ubuntu is fast, but Windows beats Ubuntu at everything else. As soon as Ubuntu is supported by essential software and games, it wil be much better than Windows. Right now though, they can release any Ubuntu they want and I still wont be impressed - unless compatibility has been resolved... completely.
 
I honestly don't know what all the complaints about linux not being user friendly is about, that's what ubuntu is for..

I'm still a noob, made the switch a few months ago, at first there is a brick wall but that is if you're close minded and expect things to work the way windows does, it's different and just like windows requires you to learn how to use it, but most of what I do is point and click so don't know what the complainants are about... but then again I actually speak from experience.

I use Windows currently due to the fact that most of the programmes I run on a regular basis are only supported by Windows.

That having been said, when I used Ubuntu, I far preferred it to Windows. With each release of Ubuntu, it gathers more support, and becomes more part of the mainstream and more likely to get support.

In general, my experience is that it is much easier to install a programme in Ubuntu than Windows. As was said, don't write off an operating just because of one bad experience. If that was the case then I would have written Windows off years ago.
 
Blah...blah...blah. Every release of Ubuntu "is the most important one yet" and the one that is going to take one Windows. I run Ubuntu 9.04 on my netbook and Windows on my desktop. Happy with both...

The point of Linux is not to be competition for Windows. It's just a happy side-effect.

My mom uses Ubuntu. "Tooks" her only a few seconds to install Skype. She's not a computer professional by any means.

If double-clicking is too hard for you, then I don't know what else can be done.

I for one can't wait for Karmic. And hopefully the developers that Canonical hired to fix all the quirks did their job. But then what will then Windows fanboiz have to complain about? ;)
