‘3G is hype’ says Cell C CEO

I wanna know how people like this chap become CEO`s of large telecom companies. Yeah... wanting high speed internet access is all "hype". So what.. when the 4G network rolls out they are going to wait for the 5G?

I may agree with him if they had actually invested in some decent infrastructure here... as it is I sometimes have trouble even using the phone.
I am overall happy with the Edge on Cell C where I am though.

My car does not have to go faster than 40km/h. All this 120km/h is just hype when there are cars out there that can do 220km/h...

Got to love the spin doctor.

CC and thus VM data speeds are reasonable. and VM's R0.50/MB is classic. however, i hate their coverage. i do not know what i was thinking porting to VM. half the time i am unreachable. that's uncalled for!

This is basically just cellc`s way of saying, "we are too poor to afford a faster network for our users"

Pulling a "me-too" by building a 3G network is a bad idea for Cell-C. Let MTN and Vodacom out-spend each other on increasingly faster mobile data...while Cellc partners with its new "sister" Telkom, after daddy buys it...
Then we have: ADSL + WiMAX + IPTV + Mobile Data + Voice on one bill.

If CellC DON'T build a high-speed data network, they will become irrelevant in the near future moabin. regardless of their partnership with Telscum, they need their own network.... Telscum themselves are in the process of becoming irrelevant unless they do something drastic v v soon.

I didn't buy a certain phone from Cellc which was way cheaper than on the other networks simply because I didn't want to switch to their archaic network and the abscence of HSDPA.

The'll lose lots of customars to their enthusiastic competitors because of their reluctance to compete in the growing mobile data market.
And Cellc's management is making a mistake if they think mobile communications of the future will be limited to voice calls and texting.

Cell-c's target subscriber is different from Vodacom's or MTN's ...
but I think they'd be better off building a WiMax network and offering 'Net access from their CST sites...

Cell-C's target market currently may be different from VC or MTN... BUT Cell-C's target market is going to start demanding high-speed data access sooner rather than later.

and how exactly are Cell-C going to build a mobile WiMax network, when the mobile standard hasn't been ratified, and they don't have spectrum licensed to them anyway?

Out of interest what are you people who need way faster speeds that 244kbps using it for? I would have thought that the majority of mobile data users check mail and the odd web page or two? Its got to be a minority of people using it for fully fledged multi media applications?
If Cell C got their prices way down I think they could still attract mobile data market share but I suspect they are equally hamstrung by Telkom's monopoly pricing to a degree.
BTW Im not saying that we dont need higher speeds, but I do think there is a fair bit of hype out there and 244kbps is still 4 times faster than dial up and I imagine adequate for most users for a while to come.

Well they need 3G to get HSDPA, unless they want to only build a HSDPA network, but then again, the competition is already on 3.6Mbs... and now Wimax upto 75Mbs....

If they want to stick with EDGE it will hurt them in the long run.

HSDPA is a 3G technology JK8, so they'll have to build a 3G network regardless.

And maybe certain specs of WiMax are up to 75mbps (I haven't checked the specs) but the mobile spec won't have speeds that high, although I stand to be corrected on that by ppl like V3G etc who are more knowledgeable than me.

The problem is that I never got 244. It was mainly dialup or so slow that even with images turned off most websites timed out when loading. The worst thing that could happen is CellC partnering with Telkom. They are both far behind when it comes to data. I like fast Internet, be it HSDPA when I am cruising around town or ADSL at home.

Oh ya its alllllll hype. thats why ive turned down an upgrade phone and will be waiting a few more months for my cellc contract to expire, so i can port to MTN or VC who atleast have 3G and some vision :)

Guess im just not in their target market.

What if they offered you another choice: EDGE for phone mobility and WiMax for your laptop?
