500 GB Blu-ray Disc

oh snap son

Make an entire backup of your hard drive on one disc.

If you have a 3gig telkom cap it'll take 14 years to fill up a blu-ray disc with pr0n.

If I was to buy a blu ray writer before the 500gb is released will it be able to write on that disc or would I need a new drive

Imagine the risk you are running if the blueray disc plays "Corrupto" on you.

You would be able to but most blue-ra drives now only support write speeds of x4. To write 500GB would take you an entire weekend :P

AS I said before, only mainstream in 10 years

If ever... 10 years is a very long time in computer terms.

Other manufacturers are already working on other technologies... some as high as multiple terabytes.

Blu-ray technology is almost obsolete before it is even out of the door.

..and I just don't trust Sony... they have a record of sticking it to the consumer, and subverting their own technologies.

we'll see... I'm willing to bet good money on it! :p

Optical storage systems are not the wave of the future IMHO.. :p

Optical disks are just too easy to damage.. :(
With 500GB of data a tiny little scratch might destroy 5GB of data in one go.

Some sort of solid state flash type memory is the way to go.. :)

In 10 years you'll be looking at 10nm disc replacements - you'll store 1Tb on one layer! (Okay, its an estimate based on the wavelength of 405nm for Bluray - around 40x bigger than the recently proven 10nm wavelengths). So I doubt we'll ever see 20 layered BD discs - there will just be no market for them.

That I tend to agree with; that and 100Mbps ADSL++++ lines should put an end to this nonsense. Get your data streaming; store it solid state for later use.

Blueray isn't even all that popular yet with the drives and discs being pretty expensive and now they want to bring out a 500GB disc... wtf?

500gb is just obscene i think bluray is here fora while though

I've seen one or two. But BR drives still cost in the region of what, R2000?

Again give those links to this secret information and which major players back this "new" technology for the computer and Movie industry. By then BluRay will be well entrenched and maybe even cheap and then maybe someone will adopt the new technology for whatever reasons if it will benefit the pocket (investment) or prevent copyright theft. So much for the "obsolete" as all the new movies is released on BluRay. BluRay is here now to stay. The only place where it may still take very long is on the "X'box. So lets do the bet now, as you wanted on HD DVD. But this time I want to be paid in advance as you already lost. :D

I remember the multilayer argument on the HD DVD where that was touted the replacement and new technology to compete with BluRay's 50Gig never in your mind would you have believed that it was for the BluRay technology instead and now a 500G, damn. What a loser of technology the industry adopted, hey? I would shudder to think what would have happened if the HD DVD format won. Maybe it would have managed a massive 45Gig by now. Who knows.
Maybe M& will invest in some real technology for a change and support BluRay in future, at least on the PC and Windoze.

Another 5 to ten years for the first world and 20 years for South Africa.

It's called Google...

http://www.google.com/ if you need the exact link.

... and I am still not buying a blu-ray player... no matter how many times you jump up and down and sing like a Sony fanboy.

Time will tell....
