White backlash to Vodacom BEE deal

I think "The Weekender" calling disgruntled white people "white supremacists" is a more than a bit unfair. From what I can understand, there were no derigotory remarks directed at other races, they just unhappy they were excluded.

It's like opening a Vodashop for Blacks only. How can they not expect peoples feelings to be hurt. In these times you cannot make exclusions according to race or sex...OR can you....First For Women Insurance? wtf.

Race? Who cares who owns what, offer me cheaper rates and better service and I'd join a company owned by a pink elephant from Iraq.

The main problem here is advertising imo.
All the other BEE deals were not in your face and everywhere, possibly trying to obviously appeal to the target market, but it seems Voda is just advertising like normal.

I would have no problem with it if the shares were going to poor township families, but im sure 99% of those discounted shares are going to already well-off blacks. THATS what i have a problem with...

More like AEE - ANC and Friends Economic Empowerment

Lesley Stones and the folks of the weekender (Business Day) seem to think so.
Lesley needs a visit from a group of men in robes armed with burning crosses and ropes. Perhaps then he'll understand the difference between a white supremacist and white person (peacefully) making their voice heard after becoming tired of being discriminated against.

White Supremacists

Who wrote this article ?

mmm Lesley Stones, Weekender ;)

I also think its a bit harsh to use that remark.
Yes, there are white individuals whom are disgruntled by these BEE deals, but calling them out be Nazi's! :o

What proof does the journo have that the creators of the campaign are White Supremacists?
Have proof that these people are sitting in their Xenophobic HQ spreading their views/protests and then call them White Supremeacists...

Its in poor taste - I hope that Lesley gets flack and loses his/her job - David Bullard lost his job for satire - lets see if Lesley will still be standing after this?

I thought everything that goes to print is meant to be researched, edited and proofed.

So the article is assuming you have to be a "white supremacist" to believe BEE deals like this is utter crap and do not actually benefit any "disadvantaged" people to begin with ?

Regardless while i don't agree with the BEE principle, i can't care less if company applies it [at their own risk] . It's THEIR problem, it's THEIR profits . As long as I [the taxpayer and consumer] are not subjected to higher tariffs or "subsidizing" people because of NON PROFITABLE business decisions...i don't care as long as i get what i pay for. If something like this makes Vodacom -better- in terms of providing a service..great...just don't penalize me [the white guy] when something like this turns out to be "write off" and now you need to regenerate the lost profit.

That said, if a company figured they can open a "blacks only" store selling say , premium goods , excluding whites, -and- they somehow make more profit than a non-racist company selling the same service to -everyone- ....go for it. Economics tend to be unbiased supply & demand....and if you voluntarily restrict your demand...your loss.

That's why i don't care about that silly "women only" insurance company. My logic tells me, an insurance firm who can actually cater for everyone are in a much more profitable position than one only catering for half of the population. Even if they somehow are cheaper now, something's gotta give ;)....eventually.

I, along with a lot of people, are against the principle of BEE. Say I go to a business and apply for a job. They say "BEE-preferred" or "black people only". That is racist. No question about it. I wasn't born and raised in a racist community where I participated in discriminating against people of other race. Yet I along with the rest of my generation is being discriminated now.
And here comes the BEE and businesses such as Vodacom who refuse to sell shares to white people? Racism..... that's all I can say and as such I for one cannot support them...

What about Chinese folks that came to South Africa after 1994 do they also qualify for this deal or for that matter any other BEE deals ?

Will it ever change from previusoly disadvantaged to permanently disabvantaged or currently advantaged ? It has been the "New South Africa"
for long enough now , you would think that deals can be made now that are made for all South africans , not just the rich .

How many black south africans can afford R2 500 ? That is more than some make a month !!!! So once again only the rich black or white get the chance .
They are not spreading the wealth amongst black South Africans , only a handful , the rich get richer and the poor get poorer , good form Vodacom !!!

I look forward to a non-racist South Africa , even though i know it wont happen in my life time . If Vodacom really wanted to make a deal for South Africans , they would turn the pay-as-you-go points you earn each time you buy airtime into shares , or percentages of shares , or something like that , not this BS!!!

One has to take into consideration that government enforces that these deals have to go through, its law and there's nothing that they can do about it.
We had the same thing with Sasol's offering and unless the law is changed, nothing will happen.

I think BEE mainly benefits the elite of the black population of the country.
The rich, will keep on getting richer, black, purple or white - with these kinds of deals in place.
When Average Joe on the street makes moerse benefits, then it can be seen to be something good.
How much of our population is living beneath the bread line?
Pensioners are still getting a raw deal.
Rather take the BEE offering and create a fund for it to help alleviate crime and poverty in this place.

BEE should be scrapped IMO, it serves only to remind us of where we have come from...Where's the transformation in that?
Why should a certain sector or the population alone reap rewards?
When are we going to call it a day?
We've had 14 years of democracy, but the trends are still the same - the people in power abusing it or rather using it to their advantage and then moving on.
How many politicians are now well established business people?
Filthy rich from the legislature and dealings they had put in place while in power, serving the people and then move off to a penthouse looking down on the people.

BEE should be done away with. So should quotas. Why should a company employ a set percentage of black, Indian or Chinese people?
The best people for the job, for the company, for the economy, for the country... Ah pipe dreams

The term "white supremacists" is out of line.

Disgruntlement is properly projected at government, not Vodacom.

I find this all to be symptomatic of an increasingly alienated minority. Fasten your seatbelts.
