+1 - unless they can really make the setup and day to day usage totally transparent, the cell co's have nothing to worry about.
VoIP is already available, and people who are tech savvy are using it - this is just another provider, who, knowing SA greedy mentality, will be more expensive than the established overseas ones.

This is true, using voip is against the t&c's of all the providers.

VC also charges for VOIP @ R20 MB. One of my buds at work discovered that last year ... ouch.
And their is nothing stopping the service providers from blocking or crippling data on a port.

Considering the others are free, and they havent really caught on, I have my doubts about these PrimeTel-Cel guys.

normally get a lot of free minutes and can't be bothered with this even if they know how
to use it, well, I can't be bothered.
Now if these guys came out as another operator and told you get this or that phone from
us and pay us and only us R25 p/m (ok, maybe bit more now that they also carry the
data costs) then it might have worked.

Once again, people who have decent phones. I am between decent phones, so stuck with an old phone atm. They need to have it work on bottom range phones, then if they implement it at a poor user level by educating the poorer users, it might actually work. But that including the shaping/20 a meg problems, I just have to say, we will see.

There are too many factors stacked up against VOIP over cellular data. Plus the latency is too high. Have you ever tried making a VOIP call over Edge, 3G or HSDPA? The latency is terrrible!

Not saying the Primetel will catch on, ever... Looks like rubbish. The reason the others like Yeigo, Skype, Fring etc... haven't caught on is because not many people have Symbian and Windows phones yet.
I agree, a broken call is worth less than 2c a minute.
BUT with the right SW and a good phone with a strong signal then it will work.

PrimeTel make no mention of the data speed of the network, dodgy!

I have read the above in the terms and conditions of MTN's contracts but I am prety sure it could be classified as illegal, simply because in order for them to tell you are using VOIP they have to analyse your data packets and that is invasion of privacy

A Java-based app for VOIP calls would be the right thing, but without the correct latency just isn't worth the effort on the mobile networks.
