New safety block on MXit

maybe parents should educate their children about the dangers in life?
 
I think it's silly that MXIT always gets into when these teens run off with strangers like morons.
I'm sorry if that's harsh, but a kid would have to be very unhappy at home or very foolish to go off with someone they've never met.
I think it's the parents' responsibility to ensure the safety of their kids, else we'd have to shut down the internet, television, schools and anything else that could influence our kids the wrong way.

How about we educate them properly and make sure they are happy enough with their lives to not behave like this?
Or if push comes to shove, no Java-enabled cellphone? Or dare I say it, no cellphone at all!
 
Now they just need a way to put some common sense into people's brains.
 
MXit’s brand manager, Laura Hallam, said because registering users have to supply their age, this made it possible to restrict chat rooms: “Most of our chat rooms are age-restricted. If you access a chat room restricted to 14-year-olds and you are 25 or older, the system will restrict you from doing so,” said Hallam.

Classic case of shooting the technology. Wonder how they vet the age of people registering? Anyone know?

Vodacom's ACM can only be deactivated by the contract holder, typically the parent and will then apply to all chat functions.
 
This is a classic case of the older generation not embracing the technology of the younger generation, and in fear they will devise, scheme and create plans to protect the younger generation from that which they themselves do not understand.

How many parents actually even know what Mxit is and how it works?
 
The problem is not the technology, if Mxit is blocked the kids will just move to another technology, Fring, Meebo, MSN live... if they can't use their cellphone they will use a friends or something else.

The parents need to talk to their kids... (from an early age) that is the best solution.

That is the reality. What I've also noticed is that certain media publications only criticize Mxit in particulary as a means to boost their own chat products.

I'm guessing they just take you at your word, short of asking for you to provide ID there's not much else they can do. The problem with this is it'd be very easy to just buy a 99c sim card and create a new mxit profile with no restrictions that parents wouldn't even know existed.
 
This will not work at all, i have seen sites games with Adult themes trying to validate my age. I can select whatever year I please from the drop downs..education is the key..tech is not bad.
 
And before some random tarp drops in with "verify their Identity by ID numbers then"

How about the international userbase that's using it

Now stick that in your pipe and smoke it

As far as I know not a lot of parents know how to use MXIT any way, now you tell me what kind of a "clever" kid would go to their parent and say:

Kid : Mom / Dad, can you kindly think of a password to stop me from accessing adult chats on mxit when you're not looking

Parent: ok my child, the password is "Ithinkthisisstupid"

Kid: Thank you for being so responsible, I will insert the password myself dont worry about it. From now on mom / dad, I will not be able to access adult chats on MXIT. U're the greatest parent ever....:D

I agree with the sentiment that we should educate our children. Don't blame technology blame the lack of parenting skills that is rampant today. If you became a mother/father as a teenager how can you teach your child to be a responsible teen.

It all starts at home PARENTS take responsibility :rolleyes:and get involved in your kids lives. Buying them SHYTE and getting them to shut up is not parenting it avoidance.
 
hey...plus one for mxit actually doing something, although i think this is more a gimmick to cover their own asses from possible future lawsuits
 
Mxit is notat fault the parents failed for not educate their own kids. it's always easier to blame something/one else

Supply their age? Like - are you sure you are over 18? Ag please.

Once parents enable the block function, all access to chat rooms and chat zones will be blocked and can only be reversed by typing in the correct password.

Mommy, mommy, please block Mxit for me, you never know when I may just feel invincible and want to flirt with an adult in the adult chatrooms... Whats the use of this 'feature' if kids can just get a sim card for R2 at the local cafe and register with a new number... they don't even need the sim card in to login with the alternative number. Mxit is bad news I'm afraid - where on earth would you create an environment where kids can socialize anonymously with adults without thinking of security first. And yes, we need to teach our kids about dangers etc, but they are naive because they are kids... that won't change.
