Switch off to avoid hefty electricity penalties

For example, if a commercial customer doesn’t save the required 20%, but simply maintains the electricity consumption (to remain the same as the yardstick period October 2006 to September 2007), the electricity bill will be about 4.6 times higher in the first month, then 6.4 times higher in the second month, and finally 8.2 times higher in the third month — compared to what was paid in that period.

What a joke, I've had a solar geyser since 1996, so have been saving electricity since then. What more must I cut down on to save another 20%?

Anyone know what Eskom's fat cats got as bonuses this year?

Yup, this system punishes the ones who have been electricity efficient.

So, I am now asking myself : How on earth am I going to save 20% on my home electricity bill when I was already doing everything possible to save electricity in April 2005 already ? Oh ... I suppose I can remove the governmint issue geyser controller, and switch to the more expensive gas for frying and boiling.

The governmint got away with charging us land improvement taxes based on figures that they made up as they went along, so now they're going to run with the same mindset figuring that we'll all just pay-up.

Toll gate fee's, building taxes on imaginary values and now electricity tax to reward previous electricity abusers.

Where is the diesel and petrol tax? Surely they're being a little slow in implementing that one?

Perhaps they should consider a quota system, where I am entitled to say a quota of 160kw/h a month, and any I have leftover I can then sell to somebody else who runs a business?

The massess are connecting to the network illegally in their millions, so let's punish the paying customers...

We all know that is the real reason, so why try and hide it?

Oh pleeeaaase...

Now I have heard it all.

How has it become the consumer's/industry's fault that ESKOM has neglected their energy supply network.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of saving electricity and any other form of energy but the manner in which they are dealing with the issue is pathetic to say the least.

I know of people living in rural area that only got electricity in 2005/2006 and back then could only afford a kettle and a few lights. Does this mean that they will NEVER be able to afford a geyser or oven??

In my opinion, this is a typical "Proudly South African" way of finding a solution to a problem that should have never been.

Fani Zulu, Eskom’s spokesman, said: “It is a necessary measure of last resort because for many years electricity demand has been growing and as a [-]country[/-] company we didn’t invest to meet the demand.
Fixed it for you. No need to blame me - I paid my bill - what did you do with the money?

And ... in 2006 - 2007 I was single ... end of 2007 I got 3 more people living in the place, and now that it's being rented out by a family of 6, how on earth am I supposed to save 20% of that?

?????

This is not well thought out.

Inflation targeting

Government sets out Inflation Targets of between 3 and 6%, but they themselves cannot even keep to their own targets. Everyone blames the cost of living, but where does the cycle begin when it come to inflation other than with the Government itself?
This years Electricity Tariff increase was more or less 42% for our area. I suspect they are looking for a similar increase for this coming year and the next?

Eskom just needs reasons to ratify it's huge tariff increases with the Regulator. Last year it was Load Shedding and new Power Stations.
This year it looks to me as if they are going to try the same approach as what was done with Water Tariffs. The more you use the more you pay. It looks like it is leading up to this?
A sliding scale of penalties on the outset, but ultimately disguised as another way of bypassing the Regulator and making their Tariff Increases look acceptable and justifiable. They wont cut you off if you use too much, you will just pay the penalties. Mark my words, Electricity in a couple of years will be charged out on a sliding scale.

I am just so sick of this. Nothing is cheap in this country any more. Government Departments are hell bent on getting their pound of flesh out of the Public's pocket. It will never end as this inflationary stance just spirals out of control and before you know it our money is worth nothing. It already is worth squat. The Rand has been debased so much and the buying power of One Rand is virtually buggerall. What can you buy with a Rand any more?

Eskom can blow it's horn to the cows come home. They claim that the Public are to blame as a result of consumption, but surely this extra consumption comes out as Revenue for them??

What about the Country as a whole. The extra electricity capacity is needed because of the expansion in the Economy seen quite clearly in our Budget Surplus the last few years. Surely then SARS has received proportionally more revenue as a result of the growth in the Economy. So why was the extra money not ploughed back into infrastructure?
Eskom/Government may be pointing a finger at the Public, but they have 4 more fingers pointing back at themselves.

Saw a program the other day on trains in the USA - being loaded up daily with 1000's of tons of coal and they are 100's of meters long. Where's our coal?

All bad planning by the gov't and now the end user must again suffer! Stuff that!

Actually not all that much. I have the figures, it's a lot less than any of the other huge companies.

We have never used a lot of electricity at home. If we aren't in a room at night, we switch the lights off. For us to save another 20% is not impractical, it is impossible. Our pool only runs for 4 hours a day as it is... and it's a 750W pump... so it doesn't even run up as the biggest part of our bill.

I know an Eskom guy in a managarial position who's just over 40 and has just paid off his house. Suffice to say the bonus was rather large considering he only bought a few years ago.

Welcome to the Soviet Union of South Africa. Where electricity is rationed and you're punished if you use more than you're allowed. What a joke. This would not happen in a free market.
