Ubuntu in 2009

faster boot times. Sounds good.

What passes for fast? 1 minute or less?

Linux still has a long way before it will gain acceptance from the average pc user...

Thanks for your amazing insight. Its actually idiot ready now if you wanna try it. Old grannies and moms are using it already.

use sarcasm much do you?

I try every version of ubuntu as soon as it's released, these points need to be fixed:

1. The menu's, application interface, taskbars, etc are ugly
2. Without Adobe apps, I can't use it...sorry, no matter how you argue, I can't use it without this
3. I do NOT want to config anything via a text file, never ever...make GUI tools for everything a normal/power user might want to configure and you might have a good product.
4. I do not work 24/7 and like to play a couple of games from time to time...without getting game writers on board Linux doesn't stand a chance...

err.. then change them... to anything you want. Theyre all fully customizable.

So you are not an average user you are a media editor? I personally run these apps in VB, but I understand Google has donated money to get these apps to run on Linux. So watch this space!

3. I do NOT want to config anything via a text file, never ever...make GUI tools for everything a normal/power user might want to configure and you might have a good product.

Well thats you! yay!. However 95% of the stuff you have to edit these days on linux does come with a Gui. Its just its easier to support people by asking them to edit the file. What were you working on that you didnt have a gui interace to edit the settings?

4. I do not work 24/7 and like to play a couple of games from time to time...without getting game writers on board Linux doesn't stand a chance...

Strange that Mac can do so well. Your point is valid but you need to mostly blame Microsoft for this.. and making business deals that make sure that linux support is excluded. A good example of this would WoW. Blizzard made a linux client, but MS has made sure it wont be released.

A lot of games can be played on Linux (there are more games for linux than Mac).. and a lot of windows games can run on linux with the help of something like Cedega.

However .. most people dont get their PCs to play games.. but I understand your pain.. as I game as well. which is why I run Windows 7 to jam games on.. and Ubuntu to work.

Linux is normal end user ready. I know this as we have dozens of machines out with clients.. and with the advent of Netbooks.. its become even more popular with the ma and pa crowd.

My son uses Ubuntu on his laptop and my ex-wife has Xubuntu on her PC. Both very happy with their installations. I've installed Ubuntu on a variety of machines for scads of other people, ranging from the younger users to Ye Olde Folkes and haven't had a single regression yet.

Not ready for the average PC user? Codswallop. The average PC user wants to do some surfing, read/write some e-mail, handle a few documents and spreadsheets and maybe pull down some torrents, if they're into that. Throw in sucking pictures off their phones or cameras and burning the odd CD and you've got the average PC user covered.

Why Ubuntu 9.04 and not 01?

Anyhow - I hope this version is going to be more netbook friendly (in particular the Acer Aspire One) but I realise this probably has more to do with Acer than Ubuntu.

Because it's released in april (4th month)
9.10 is released in october (10th month) - dont ask me why they do it this way though...

Check out Ubuntu EEE for netbooks

I Agree with w1z4rd, you are not an average user. My parents are quite happy with Linux as are the majority of PC users or will be because most people these days use the PC to read email, surf the web, buy stuff online and use Facebook. All these things work as well in Linux as it does in Windows.

They also use Word and Excel and OpenOffice has matured to a point where it is very functional.

Now when I installed Ubuntu I decided I will not do any tweaking to it, it must work out of the box or I remove it. It worked, my graphics card works great, my WiFi works great and the office tools and internet works great, and that is what the average user wants.

I still have my Windows PC for my games as I decided not to do any tweaking and I am not going to fool around with Cedega, so for gamers Linux is not ther way to go. Graphic designers or media editors, again not Linux, Mac or Windows then, but gamers and media editors are not the average PC user.

1) Don't think in Windows terms, break out of the idea how Windows thought a machine should work.
2) install adobe products for Linux then. DUH
3) SuSE addresses that problem with the Yast central configuration manager.
4) Try using wine, lookup applications that are compatible: http://www.winehq.org/

i am new to Ubuntu can someone please help me install openoffice 3 i got the files installed on my pc under documents but its its not under application if i want to use it

I hope Ubuntu 9.04 supports more games
It will surely make Linux more popular with kids and after all kids are the future
plus then i don't have to reboot in windows to play games

Have you tried Xubuntu?

Have you tried Xubuntu?
No.

I might crack the case, install some more RAM (the default 512mb is a little low), and install an OS I'm more familiar with.
