Windows is still more user friendly. Ubuntu is pretty good, compared to other distributions of Linux, though.
Xubuntu requires 128MB of RAM.

If you're reading this Mark, please don't go the MS route where the system "boots" to the GUI in 30 seconds, but then you have to wait another 30 seconds for the system load and the GUI beginning to respond. What I like about Linux is that the moment Gnome appears you're ready to go.
Closed source 3D GPU drivers (yes YOU nvidia) held Linux gaming back. ATI (now owned by AMD) very recently opened their specs for their R700 GPUs, so expect to see kick-ass open soruce Linux ATI drivers later this year.
My next purchase will definitely be ATI.
I dont think it was the amount ram that was giving me problems with the Ubuntu installation - unless that effects wifi?
No.. it looks like a kernel issue they are working on. It just bums me out when it doesnt work for someone.

Actually by recent reports, a lot of these Netbooks are getting returned because the buyers turned them on and found it didn't look like Windows.

Thats because it "doesnt work like windows". If this is true (and I havent seen any evidence to suggest thats the case) I would blame dodgy sales people for not educating their clients on what it does and is.

I would also say they were at fault for not letting the customers know, but perhaps if they did know that they were getting laptops without Windows, they might have not bought it in the first place.

I agree. Not that it's 'hard', but something similar to a simple SETUP.EXE would have been nice. But alas, it is Linux after all and you need to be at least a LITTLE BIT tech savvy.

I agree. Not that it's 'hard', but something similar to a simple SETUP.EXE would have been nice. But alas, it is Linux after all and you need to be at least a LITTLE BIT tech savvy.
Well UBUNTU is really easy to install applications even if you do not like the command line. Getting hardware to work is a problem but heck, it even happens in Windows.
UBUNTU is far from faultless, but its going forward at a fast rate and is fast becoming an alternative to Windows for many users.

I think when we get as 'savvy' as many of us are, we forget the other ordinary users and how they view things.
To all my dear friends whom use a computer. I have an unofficial PSA for you. We are experiencing an issue, and it has been a long time coming to address the situation. This issue is enough to make your mother's hide in fear, but warming enough to change your life.
This issue I speak of is a force not to be reckoned with, but it is only a matter of time until your first contact. These people are fanboys. They work together so greatly but spark great wars upon each other. I am going to tell you how to deal with these left wing fanatics. Be advised though... You should never attempt to start a conversation with these folk. For they are heartless and will use the cheapest tricks in the book.
Type of fanboy: Windows
These are the most reclusive of all fanboys. If you happen to find one of these be very gentle. They are young and new to the world. Usually these fanboys slowly convert to Mac or Linux. You will usually see these fine people in forums. They lurk around and don't say much. I have a suspicion to believe this breed is dying out. This will not stop them from attacking though.
When attacked by a Windows fanboy just let it roll off your shoulder. These are quick simple stabs anyone can take. They strike in small amounts only leaving time for one comment and they've vanished. You'll be glad to know that when they go to bed at night though they have dreams of large apples and flying penguins after their ass.

I have just read through the 8.10 section of that how2, I wouldn't describe it as insane, perhaps non-trivial is a better description - I have had to do a lot more than that getting various distros working on normal desktop PCs, luckily most problems can be solved with BIOS upgrades and only then applying OS updates etc.
Yeah. I'll wait for now. What would be handy is a simple method of disk imaging so I know I can always revert back to the/my default one.
It's a bit more than the average user should be subjected to. I wouldnt object if they simplified it a bit
